On the other hand, American Imperialism seems to bring bad karma. Perhaps if we were all Buddhists, we'd be less imperialistic.

The answer is no. The US might actually have more friends, but it's not so important that all people in the US become Buddhists. What is important is that the basic principles of the US, of freedom, tolerance and democracy would be applied, instead of the values of corporatism, exclusion and plutocracy that have replaced them. The basic values of the US are completely compatible with Buddhism.
