Fasting to Muslims is an act of worship where we simply don't eat from sun up to sun down. This act is very rewarding in blessings as well as spiritually. The biggest difference is intention. We do it for the pleasure of Allah not because we can't afford to eat or don't want to in the case of dieting.
And yes fasting cleanses the digestive system which is one of its many benefits.

well . . if you are referring to water fasting as a method of restricting food and only drinking water . . then what you are doing is maintaining fluids in your system so you don't dehydrate . . . IMO something like this or fasting in general should only be done to shake up your body for a day or two . . I don't think many would agree with a long term regimen likr this . . neither one can be good

Starvation is prolonged fasting. Fasting is pointless. Your digestive system is not in need of any special cleansing -- it is quite capable of taking care of itself.
