Jesus obeyed God to the point of death on the cross. He knew that death would not be able to keep Him in the grave.
He did it for us, because death can keep us in the grave. Everyone sins somewhere, sometime. Sin doesn't go to heaven. So even one sin will keep us out of heaven.
Jesus was without sin. The wages of sin is death. So He did not earn death. Our sins are revealed when we see that He was bruised for our iniquities & wounded for our transgression. He shed His own blood for the remission of our sins.
God is ultimately responsible, but He decided to do this because of our sins. Jesus had to have victory over the snakes deceptions & win back eternal life for us. Since the fall of the first Adam, death & hell reigned & we all sin. Since the resurrection of the new & final Adam, so we can all receive eternal life & His blood cleanses us from all sin.
Actually if mankind was not sinful, Jesus would not have died on the cross.
God made a way so we can go to heaven.

Edit : exactly HOW is someone dying in such a horrible way, that jesus did in anyway got anyhting to do with 'saving' us? and what are we being saved from? a life of sin?? but i thought we had a choice? if we choose to have a life of sin, then you are not saving them , you are denying their choise... besides not everyone does have a choise, what about abused children.. are they sinners if they grow up to be serial killers???
