No, mental hospitals are basically for people that are suicidal, a threat or danger to themselves, or someone that is doing really badly in their lives.

All that a mental hospital does is the same as counseling and medication. You see a psychiatrist for 15 minutes and he medicates you. You then won't see him for another few days. There isn't much one on one counseling either. The only good thing is that they have group therapy where you sit in a room with other people and share your story.

The worse part is that you sit around most of the day with nothing to do, and little control over what you can do. They took away my shoelaces at the Mental hospital that I went to. The best thing about it was the food. I mean this hospital have better food than a resturant!

Also, if you don't have insurance forget about it. Most insurances require a hefty co-pay, but if you don't have insurance you are looking at several thousand dollars depending on the hospital. Unless you are commited and then the state pays for everything.

So unless you are an immediate threat to yourself, I suggest just getting another psychiatrist and asking him to change your medication. Trust me, my medication works wonders for me, I went through quite a few before I found Effexor.

it depends dr's do not put you in a mental hospital unless you are a threat to yourself or others and you can get outpatient counseling with meds as well if outpatient counseling does not work ( i would try this first) with medicine than you will probably need hospitalization and a higher dose of the same med or a different med and to be in hospital so they can monitor your progress. its not so bad i was there a couple times and grateful for thier help

You need to ask why your counseling isn't helping. Maybe it's the medication that isn't working for you, or maybe you aren't making a connection with your therapist. Or maybe you aren't doing the things your therapist is telling you that you need to do in order to get better. You have to work hard at it, you can't expect the therapist, the drugs, or hospital to do it for you. Those are there to help you, not do it for you.

Counciling is great. I recommend it for anyone with even mild symptoms. There is no shame in going and they can help faster than you might expect. I would avoid the mental hospital. That is sort of like waiting until you need surgery before consulting a doctor.

Mental Hospitals are good IF you are not stable or sucidal. If you can wait to see a therapist or family doctor then do so. The hospital will do questionaires, decide on what meds if necessary and introduce therapy, stablize you and release you, directing you to more therapy.

i had to go in mental hospitals many times n they dont do much good either if u dont go to the right one.so maybe ur not with the right counselor n u may need medication adjustments...it took me awhile but i found the right kind of counselor that is sensitive to my needs.u could find a partial-hospitalization program where ur there during the day..ur counselor can help u find that kind of program.

The hospital is for people who are really sick. If you have a heart problem, your dr treats it from his office, and you don't go to the cardiac unit of a hospital unless you have a heart attack. Going to therapy, seeing your psychiatrist regularly, and exhausting all medication options until you find the ones that work, are all you really need for now. If your dr thinks you should be admitted, he will make the reccommendation at the approriate time.

If you start to contemplate suicide, want to injure yourself or others, or are experiencing serious delusions or hallucinations, THEN go to the hospital. It's expensive, and it's much more comfortable at home.

It depends how severe your condition.
They can help if you have a serious problem like sucicidal thoughts or hearing voices (nervous breakdown, etc.)
Choose what will meet your needs...substance abuse?
-These are all questions to ask. If depressed, does it get in the way of your life...has it been a long time...
Feel no guilt in accepting help.
