The way to garnish a martini is with one olive. Any more and your martini becomes a snack bar. A lemon twist is also acceptable, with the twist rubbed over the edge of the glass.

It it's a true martini then I would go with a green olive, and maybe a pearl onion.
Also try garlic stuffed olive, or jalapenio stuffed olive for some interest.

If you are doing a apple martini, a sweet apple candy would be really great, and sugar around the rim.

If it's a chocolate martini a strawberry and a shave of chocolate looks great.

And if it's just a vodka martini, I would to a slice of orange, or a citrus stuffed olive. You don't want people to think they are getting a traditional martini if they are not.

If you put an an olive in it is a Martini, if you drop in a couple of pearl onions it is called a Gibson. The outside garnish is usually a thin slice of lemon peel.

Technically conversing, a "classic Martini" might want to be garnished with olives. in case you garnish a "classic Martini" with cocktail onions, it then turns right into a "Gibson". Martini's which comprise a "Cosmo" might want to get a lemon twist (rind in basic terms), yet frequently, any flavored martini might want to be garnished with regardless of the necessary style of that martini is, i.e. Apple Martini with an apple wedge, Chocolate Martini with a hershey kiss...

I think that depends on the kind of martini you are drinking and personal choice.

You can use, pearl onions, olives, twist of lime, twist of lemon, if you are drinking a chocolate martini you could use a strawberry.
