A choke collar is only as effective as the person using it. There is a right and wrong way to use a choke chain and there are a whole lot of people using them the wrong way.

There are different schools of thought on the choke chain coolar, but all users agree on one thing - NEVER, EVER tie a dog out when the only collar is a choke chain collar. That is not what it was designed for. The choke chain collar is designed for 2 functions - a show collar and a training collar. in both instances, it needs to be applied correctly.

It is used in the show ring because it is least likely to mash or alter the fall of the hairs on the dog's neck. When points count, you don't want to hide the grooming you've done to your dog to be hidden or damaged by a flat leather or nylon collar.

In training, it is used in conjuction with a regular leather or nylon collar. A large, muscular dog - even a 4-month old - can generate some serious pulling power on a small or weak person holding the leash. The choke chain is used to get the dog's attention - that's it. First, you use a clicker or a one word voice command - then give ONE quick jerk of the leash to get the dog to respond and stay focused on YOU. If the clicker or voice command is followed, the jerk is not necessary. You only use it while training. And when training, you use it only when needed and then use the regular collar.

It is not wrong to use a choke chain collar - but in the wrong hands, it is a device of torture rather than humane training. It should never be left on the dog all the time as the only collar it wears.

A choke collar is a good tool if used correctly. However, it totally depends on both the puppy and the person using it. With some dogs you don't need the choke collar, you can train a puppy with a buckle collar (and I've done it with several).

Some dogs are much harder to control and you need to use the choke collar for control. If you use one, be sure you know how to put it on (if you put it on upside down, it doesn't release and will choke the dog). When you give a correction with a choke collar, you give a quick tug, then release. You need to be careful not to keep pulling on it because a dog who's being choked is not going to learn - he's too busy fighting the collar.

It is not the type of collar that has the ability to be abusive. That distinction is reserved for the hand at the other end of the lead. It is however important that a person seek out instruction on how ANY TYPE of collar is intended to be used.
I probably do 99% of my yard work (O/B, etc) with a "British Slip Lead" which in reality is nothing more than a fabric choke chain. Before I started using the slip lead I did 99% of my yard work with a normal flat buckle collar. I'm still to see the dog that knows the difference,,,,, but my wrist sure does.

Choke collars are not the greatest thing, it puts a lot of pressure on their throat and it is not necessary. The Gentle Leader and training are a better route to take and its kinder to the dog. I have always have had large dogs and will not use them. An untrained dog will pull on the collar applying constant pressure to the throat, almost choking them. The Gentle Leader is less painful and a 100 times more effective. The Gentle Leader (head halter) works like halter on a horse, if you put a collar on horse you have no control even if it was a choke collar. They only thing you accomplish is discomfort to the animal.

They can be a very effective training tool. Depending on the size of the puppy I might wait a couple more months to use one, but if it's a larger dog then he should be fine right now. Just make sure that he never has the choke collar on unsupervised, it's too much of a suffocation hazard should he get caught on anything.

It depends on a few things, one if the choke collar is just a chain that goes through a loop when ur dog yanks on it those are okay, but the ones with the metal prongs are not, unless its a very big dog (doberman german shepard), for a 4 month puppy dont use the choker, just use a regular old collar and a leash (< no duh)

Choke collars are great but most women prefer to be spanked with a whip instead

Choke collars are accepted by experts & they are not cruel (believe me I would be screaming not to use them if I thought they were!). The first thing to make them successful & NOT cruel is to teach YOU exactly how they should be used. Ask the "Dog Whisperer" or any professional trainer who's techniques you trust.
