I have asked my mother to home-school me before but she says she can't, she has to go to work in order to pay her bills and such.
I'm in the 9th grade, what other ways can I be taught other than actually going to school? What types of home-schooling are there? What is best?

There are many great options.
1. Many communities have co-op programs where the children can come for "homeschool" classes. (I chuckle because this becomes groupschool.) But it is okay --- many parents that have skill or knowledge in special subjects will teach what they know. Many are professionals in their field.
2. Online programs are available. I'm not familiar with any particular online schools but you can look for them by doing an internet search.
3. There is now a myriad of home-school curriculum on the market. You will get many responses.

4. I will tell you about the program we use at home. It is a self-teaching method that works very well. The students do need someone to supervise or at least hold them accountable.
The work to be done is very basic: Math , Writing, and Reading.
You can read about it at www.robinsoncurriculum.com
I believe it to be a best choice for my family. And I also have contact with nearly 2000 families that think the same way.

Lisa, don't feel discouraged by some of the hurtful remarks made by some answers people have listed.

I was a homeschooler from k5 to 12th grade. I am now 20 years old and am just as smart as the average kid that graduated from a public school or private type. A mom is nice to have be you teacher, but there is another way to go about homeschooling. I did Abeka Christan Video, a teacher taught me by video, Type up AbekaChristaineducation on the Web and it will tell you more.
Another my friends have used, is ACE it comes in booklets, for each subject, easy to comprehend and self explanatory,
Many people have different views on whether to go to school or be taught at home. I was taught this way, because I'M a military child and we moved so much, sometimes over seas, which would have been way to hard to jump into a foreign school. I hope Ive helped you...Don't loose hope! Be sure to tell your mom about this, she can still work and not have to do a thing, but keep an eye on your finished work.

I think you are too smart for public schooling!
Public school is basically disgusting. The teachers
can be terrible, the students can be horrible and the
whole system is pretty lazy. The curriculum is stupid.
In fact, the teachers union is stupid and disgusting--
just read what they think! And they hate homeschooling.
How shallow! (That's the National Education Association,
the NEA, FYI) How dare they think they know what's best
for all of OUR children!

Most of the high test scores are coming out of homeschool.
I wonder why? Is it because the student has time to think?
I just read a recent study that shows children need alot
of QUIET time. How do you get this in a noisy, sticky,
germy classroom? My children picked up diseases, lice,
etc. in public school, and they were exhausted from too
many activities.

Because they can work on something until they get it?

Homeschooling can be just as social as you want it to be.
Since when did people start socializing at school? I thought they went to school to LEARN, not socialize! This is a total and
ridiculous misconception. It sounds like a broken record!
And it is pitiful and so uncreative! (sigh)

Did you read the story a few years ago about the family with five children all in Julliard for piano? They started homeschooling so these talented children could practice piano four hours a day.

The home learning schedule is flexible and tailored to the student.
The curriculum is also tailored to the student. You can learn without a teacher.

My homeschooled children are in grave danger of becoming
overly socialized! And it can happen in a hurry with all the
other homeschoolers. They get together, and boy, do they
ever socialize. They are friendly. The are polite. The can
talk to little kids and adults.

For instance, tonight we had a homeschool meeting. There were 60 children playing in the gym, and 50 families all discussing ways to homeschool!

You can certainly homeschool by yourself. There are correspondence courses, like Christian Liberty Academy.
This is a Christian school that offers a distance learning program.
Abeka, Bob Jones, etc. are all distance learning programs.

Do the research. Ask for help. Write it down for your mom.
Show her what you find. Beg, if necessary, but stay away from
government school, like the plague!

*Correspondence schools
*Private tutors
*Get some books, divide them into 36 weeks, and
get going!
*Read literary classics and write about them--this could
be Reading 101 and Writing 101
*Do on on-line math course, or just start grinding out a math
book--math is a practiced skill--make sure you know the basics.
Try Accounting--Lifepacs (Alpha Omega) has some good easy
to learn workbooks.
*Friends good in a subject
(my daughter used to tutor the neighbor in Math--mostly they talked! But she learned it~)

The world is wide open in the home school.
You are wise to want to avoid public school.

What is BEST for everyone is not always the same thing. Is there a reason you don't want to go to school? Try talking to your mom and explain your position. There are on-line courses. Try and remember, working pays the bills. Give your mom some insight to why your feeling the way you feel and maybe together you can come up with a compromise. Good luck!

I'm homeschooled, and I guess for you if you really wanna do it then the best thing I could think of would be to do like some of my "homeschooled" friends do- find out what highschool credits you need, then get hooked up with a homeschool group in your county, and find out how many of those classes you can take, example: monday-english class, tuesday-biology class, wednesday-algebra class.... ect. You can take one class every day and they will give you your home work for the week, maybe you can convinve your mom to let you homeschool if you can just find somewhere to go while she's at work. This makes room for any special interests that you might have such as ballet, soft ball, basketball, piano ect. If your mom can't drive you to some of the classes then you could find somebody else to come pick you up. Good luck!

You didn't say what the reason you think you need to be home schooled is, are you being threatened, or picked on, or are you just wanting to stay in bed longer and watch the TV or be online when you want? What is best is for you to discuss your problems in school with a counselor, and your mother, and see what can be done to find a way of protecting you from what your trying to run away from. If you mother can't home school you, you have to face up to your fears or you will be running from everything the rest of your life. If your wanting to stay in bed longer and be able to watch TV and go online, then I say your just being lazy and need to get over yourself.

Hi Lisa, only YOU know what is best for you... The world can be your classroom, you only 'need' the desire to learn, you don't 'need' a teacher unless you want one. Unless you are mentally challenged (and I mean in the literal sense of the word) you are a capable learner of anything your heart desires. Trust in your abilities and nothing can stop you.

Get your hands on a copy of Grace Llewelyn's "The Teenage Liberation Handbook: How to Get a Real Life and a Real Education". Great book, awesome information, lots of true stories about real teens that have experienced the totally AWESOME freedom that comes from leaving the public school system, as well as tons of resources and how-to's for learning what you want, how to get into college or trade schools, etc., etc.

Totally ignore the people trying to say that you 'need' school in order to have friends...they tell you that because they honestly only know 'their' way and are close-minded. Ignore them if they say that the only job you can get is flippin' burgers which is funny seeing how many people in those areas of work were public schooled. Also ignore those who say that you are lazy if you don't want to school...so what...sleep in and enjoy life (not everyone outside of school gets up at the crack of dawn...why should you have to?)

Finally, if you have earned your parents trust and they know that you won't tear the house apart but have a sincere desire to educate yourself, then you only need permission to quit school.

I hope the best for you!

I don't know why you don't want to go to school anymore, but unfortunatly, your parents are the ones who have to get you your schoolbooks if you are to be homeschooled. If you are disaplined enough, maybe you can do the work during the day while she is at work, and then when she comes home, you can go over it with her and she can give you lessons for the following day.

Try ICS.com. They have a very good high school program where you will be able to earn your highschool diploma in about a year or two. It really is a reasonable program. The only thing that might suck a bit is that it costs about $900,00 but its totally worth it!
