we live on a busy road and so we have our whole property fenced in but just yestarday my son figured out the lock, any suggestions? Any particular locks out there that young children can't figure out too easily? The name of the type of lock and where you purchased it would be helpful. Keep in mind we have to be able to get in and out fairly easily and frequently.

You need a squeeze latch. It is a kind of latch where you have to squeeze two metal pieces together to open the latch. Most 2-year-olds don't have that much hand strength.
In addition to child safety, I have seen squeeze latches used for dog pens and primate cages.

I have a chain link fence and my son figured out how to open it at 20 months. We took a regular padlock type lock (the One with the key not combination) and inserted it through the latch on the fence.

in your hardware store you should be able to find a spring loaded hook and eye lock
the difference is, is that it has got a spring underneath it
it is about an inch and a half long you screw both parts into the gate,it costs about a quid and the lock part is like an L shape the bottom of the L goes into the eye by pulling the spring underneath the L then when you have put it in the eye you ley go off the spring and it is automatically released my near 3 year old cant manage it on his rabbit hutch and he gets into alsorts like letting himself out of the back garden and running down the road
hope u find what u are looking for
they should know what u are talking about if u say a spring loaded hook and eye

I'd invest in a new fence. If he's all boy, he'll just learn to climb over the fence if he can't get the gate open. Maybe just hook an electric box to it so he gets a LITTLE jolt out of it. Nothing to hurt him, just shock him a bit so he doesn't want to touch it...works for animals.

well first you haven't even told us what kind of lock your using so we cant be very helpful if we tell you to get the same thing you already have. second just try putting the lock at a higher location so your toddler cant reach it. and when hes older tell him never to open the gate unless you say so.

KEY LOCK. Also, don't put anything near the fence that he could climb and get over. Explain that the road is dangerous!

Padlock and tight chain. Only you have the key. We can put men on the moon, so I refuse to believe an adult can't find a way stop a toddler opening a gate.

I say forget about getting a different lock. It would be just as smart to reinstall the existing lock at a much taller height where your baby can't possibly reach it.

Get one of those one alarms that were on tv. (They have sticky stuff on the back so it sticks to anything). It has something to do with magnets or something and when the magnetic force (or whatever) is broke (like when he opens the gate) a loud alarm goes off. Most likely it will scare him and he won't open the gate anymore. Here's the website:
