The image of God as a bearded older man can be directly traces back to the Greeks and their depictions of Zeus. As for the Devil, a great deal of his appearance in art comes from The Green Man or The Horned God of pre-Christian Europe.

Most Christians don't believe in an actual person sitting above the clouds or in a red man with horns. They are simply images from classic art.

However, God is frequently anthropomorphized by Chritian sects, given likes and dislikes, preferences in politics, and intense interest in human reproductive practices. Odd traits for a being beyond humanity to have, don't you think? One would imagine that a being that could create a universe with a word would be above and beyond such mortal concerns. The anthropomorphization of God says far more about its followers (and literary creators) than it does about God.

Maybe the fact that "god created us in his image" and he used to walk around the garden of eden (all in Genesis) would make someone take an athropomophic view of god.

I live in a Mormon community. It's bad because they have a large support group that gathers once a week (or more) to convince eachother they are still right about their mythology. They stop listening if you say anything that challenges them.

because humans tend to think that they were created in God's image, so they create him in humanity's image to keep even. It's easier than trying to live up to high standards. I personally am all for flimsy moral standards!

It's a way for our minds to comprehend God. We could not comprehend Him if we were to really see Him.

As opposed to demonizing him? People anthropomorphize everything.
