A cardiologist does not perform surgery. They strictly handle heart problems medically or minimally invasive procedures. A cardiothorasic surgeon, however, would handle any surgery that require a sternotomy (open heart surgery). A cardiothorasic surgeon would be the person performing sugery on the left vertical (such as an aortic valve replacement)

Hopefully it would be a Board-Certified CardioThoracic surgeon with sufficient experience in the planned procedure. About the only other legitimate option would be an Emergency Room Physician performing a last ditch thoracotomy with direct cardiac massage and/or repair.
