The first two people on earth, Adam and Eve, by their actions, showed that they didn't want Jehovah God's laws or his intervention in their affairs. Jehovah told them, that in the day they eat the forbidden fruit, they would positively die. Once they ate, they started dying. The couldn't help but pass on to their children, the imperfection and death that resulted from sin. If Adam & Eve had never sinned they would still be alive today. Read Romans 5:12 that shows that thru one man, Adam, sin and death spread to the whole human family.
Now thankfully, we have the ransom price paid by Jesus Christ, so that we can get the hope of everlasting life back (now read vs. 18). So now there's the earthly resurrection hope, so that all who have died can come back to life on earth with eternity in view. You would have to explain in very simple terms to a 5 year old, but it can be done. Don't underestimate what they can understand.

Here is the biological explanation:
If life did not die, then the present and future generations would be in compentition for mates, food, and resources. A parent competing against their children for survival defeats the purpose of reproduction from an evolutionary standpoint.

That's how the world works. If no one died, but people kept having babies, we would be too over-populated and our Earth be destroyed by pollution.
Also, if you practice the Catholic religion, or something close, you can explain that Heaven is a good place so when the time comes for someone to die, it isn't always bad

We're here for just a little while because our bodies get tired and shut down. When we go to be with Jesus we will get glorified bodies, like Jesus has, and they will never wear out.
Psalm 90:10 The days of our years [are] threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength [they be] fourscore years, yet [is] their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

I asked my son to think about what it would be like to live forever (Not a a pretty picture). I told him that no man can see God and live and I want to be with Jesus some day. He agreed that he would love to live in paradise with Jesus, too.

We wear out over time like any other machine. Nothing lasts forever.

People have to die to appreciate life. If life were indefinite, no one would have any incentive to do anything, since they could always do it tomorrow. But since life is fleeting, we all have motivation to live.
