they are very easy on gas.. the diesels at least.
they are tough as nails, i have seen them well over 400,000 km's.. but when something major does break, the parts are relatively expensive, unless you can get them used.
i would buy a jetta provided i liked the style, but i already have a good working car.

Jettas or any other car for that matter are only as reliable as you treat them. Volkswagens however need to be religiously serviced or they will definately poop in your lunch pail. Its by no means a Toyota or a Honda. Volkswagens need TLC. The biggest problem people have are that the timing belts break on them between 75 and 90k miles. Don't and I repeat don't put this off. You will spend around 5k just like the guy above. Along with the timing belt the water pump, tensioners, and pulleys must be replaced. They have historically frozen up and broken belts. At the dealer for all that you will spend in the neighborhood of $1100. Once you do that you're good for another 75k miles. If you decide to get a turbo model you really really need to change the oil frequently and use the right oil. The engine blocks are small and the oil gets very hot. If you let the oil go over its interval sludge will build up and block your oil passages. Click on the link below. This is a site that is full of people that have had problems with Jettas. My observation though is that they have not kept up on the critical maintenance.

I don't think jetta's are very good but if you want something reliable and don't care about mileage something with a V8 is best or a V6 is good because 4 cylinders work twice as hard as V8s to do the same amount of work. But it doesn't matter what kind of engine you get if you drive it hard and give it full throttle everywhere. You can also look at reviews of cars which are usually pretty acurate. Hope this helped.

I have an '01 jetta with a VR6. I spent $5k on the engine last year.
broke a valve off. as long as that doesn't happen to you you'll be fine. expect to buy a few brake switches in the next year or so. they fail more that any other part VW has ever made. In fact they have a recall for the switch, they are about to come out with a recall on top of that recall. thay drive great and are well worth the extra care they may require.

That is getting close to ten years old. You may just be buying someone else's problem. If you can get a diesel they seem to last longer. VW has a pretty good reputation though it is a foreign car. People who have a Jetta seem to like them.

i own a repair shop,,and i can tell you plain old truth about them,,there really good little cars,,the problem is people don't take care of them because they think because its a vw,,that it will last forever,,they will if there taken good care of,,most people brag about never spending any money on one,,this is a bad thing,,if one has been well taken care of,,it will be a good car to own,,and it seems the older ones were the better ones to own,,i do work on all of them,,new and old and i have seen new ones give more trouble than old ones,,again it all goes back to how they were taken care of,,good luck,,if you find one you like,,ask questions about it,,before you buy it,,i hope this help,s.

Friend of mine had one which seemed ok, but any car that age is likely to have some problems.
