Won't that just cause people to get here by plane or car or ship? And over-stay their tourist visas like about half of illegal immigrants already do now? And then they will never be able to leave since they won't have valid papers.

The fence works in Israel because they also have very tough checkpoints, and you can't get in if you are Palestinian without proper papers. But we are never going to outlaw tourism from Mexico, are we? So I don't see how it could work the same way here.

They want to give uneducated people a false sense of security and racist people false hopes which will result in VOTES.

It will give anyone with a brain a sore stomach and a headache. It means less time with your family if you are in the military, law enforcement or US Customs. It will give everyone in the US inflation.

I've always had two problems with building a wall. First, unless you start it 50 feet underground then go up 50 feet above ground and a mile off shore, gaps will always be found. The other problem is it gives a false sense of security. Nearly half of illegal immigrants enter the country legally as a tourist or a student, etc. They just don't go home. There is also the Canadian border which is longer than the Mexican border. If I was a terrorist and wanted to get into the US why would I want to bother with Mexico? I would just stroll across the border in North Dakota or one of the thousands of northern border crossings.

There is no way to stop illegal immigration. Not going to happen. Can't be done. Because every beach, every river, ever stretch of border is another point of entry.
What we need to start doing is establishing rules and procedures that are effective and practical given the reality of the situation, and stop jumping up and down and screaming about the problem.
You hit the problem "knowing who is here and where they are". And that requires an effective and practical plan to deal with the 12-15 million illegal immigrants already here. And that's not going to happen when the only plan anyone comes up with is "deport them" or "build a fence". Because that's just like saying "arrest and imprison all the criminals". Don't you think police have been trying to do that for decades? Not going to happen. We need sensible, practical, effective solutions. Not extremism.

Hardly! The people who cross over the border from Mexico are not going to hop on an airplane ... these people would rather pay coyotes than do it the right way anyway ... the House just voted on erecting a 700 mile long fence in the most densely populated border areas, which will stop border hoppers ... they also voted on giving border security a better mandate to deal with drug smugglers and fleeing cars ... all in all, a step in the right direction ...

You have a point, but I just can´t resist:
Someone will get the fence contract, some congressperson´s buddy.
Also, they have to appear to be "working" on something, since they actually do nothing and make more than a real worker will in 15 years. Did I mention their pension for life after one term? The life-long health insurance?
Yep, there´s a whole lot of "service to the nation" going on in DC.

HR6061 passed in congress today, now it goes to the Senate. This bill provides 700 miles of two-layered reinforced fencing along the southwest boarder with prioritized placement at critical, highly populated areas and requiring an evaluation of infrastructure needs along the northern border.

I don't think you know what your talking about. Congress isn't anywhere near passing anything about building a fence because they can't agree on what is best. If they did build a fence; however, it would have positives and negatives just like anything else.

And you don't need valid papers to get deported if you are found here illegally.

It's better than allowing them to casually trot across the border. I heard an interesting idea where thousands of webcams would be on the US-Mexican border fence and the general public would have access to the cameras. There would be a 1-800 number to call to report suspicious activity and border patrol would respond.

Well, the fence is just part of it. 'Comprehensive' means basically 'all angles', as in 'think about all the different ways that people could come to our country illegally' etc.

Like it or lump it, the day of National ID might be coming sooner than we like, and in-fill is the byword of many municipalities these days. 'Growth' has been so over-hyped by our politicians for so many years, just in our lifetimes I predict we're going to watch the US population BALLOON as never seen before. Now, whether there'll still be sufficient arable land by the end of that time, is questionable, nevermind fresh drinking water etc.
We're going to see changes, and one of those changes is going to be stricter controls on immigration, and the people that were profiting by it are going to scream bloody murder. It's not right to expect americans to feed all 180 million of the neighbor kids.

Support the US Border Patrol!

Fence seems to be working in Israel. However, historically - this idea is doomed. As a short term solution - it can work.
