I heard that some places in the West, like Colorado and Wyoming are selling horse meat, and it has been approved by the FDA. Also that some Europeans eat it. Does anyone consider it a sin to eat it?

I'm sure I have eaten horse meat and just didn't know about it! The same goes for rats, cats and dogs.

I don't put much stock in what the FDA "approves" for human consumption. If we all of a sudden had a surplus of a non domesticated animal, you best believe it would get the FDA seal of approval. I also don't care what the Europeans do, we have different cultures and whether or not someone considers it a "sin" to eat something is simply a matter of their faith and as an American I must respect that.

Monkey brains, chocolate covered roaches, chicken fried rats are just some of the meals that have been presented to me while overseas. But those folks did not respect my desire not to consume them. And what's the deal with French folks walking around with unwrapped bread under their hairy airpits? I think I'd eat a piece of cooked horsemeat before I took a bite of that bread!

I have never eaten it knowingly but as a kid there was a local restaurant that was fined for serving horse meat as steak and I heard it tastes great. In some cultures horse meat is a staple meat and in other cultures it is a luxury meat. It supposedly tastes even better than beef. It is available if you want it and I am sure the FDA has no objection either.

it was popular during WW 2 when there was a shortage of beef.

I predict that when Mad Cow disease gets a real foot hold in the market place (due to greedy farmers feeding ground-up dead cow brains to their herds) and Bird Flu shows up (due to overprotected birds carrying the virus around the world), then people will be lining up for a taste of horse. I am sure Big Macs will be horse parts and there will be a naming contest to see what to call them to increase their popularity among kids (maybe a Filly fillet ?). The big steak houses will be selling Stallion Steaks and the consumer world won't miss a beat.

I don't think it is a sin to eat it. it is just not appealing to me. I believe it is used more for dog food. I prefer fish, rice, veggies and fruits to red meats though. I think when the local super markets start selling horse meat I will give up on red meats entirely.

it's not culturally acceptable to eat horse meat here, but in some countries it's perfectly okay. Same thing with whale meat. I have had buffalo meat, on the west coast, it's actually good.

A sin ? Heavens no... but I have plenty of other choices in meat / protein so I simply don't eat due to that reason.

No, its not anymore of a sin to eat horse than to eat cow....lol. If our forefathers..had jumped on a cow and rode off....we'd all be eating horse....

i dont think its a sin to eat anything. i do think its gross to eat meat though, not because it was a dirty animal, just because i dont like the appearance or texture.
