My maltese-poodle seems to be more unwilling to share/agressive ever since she got into a pretty bad fight with her sister - a female Chihuahua. After the fight, the two girls had to be separated all the time. We have since found a new home for the Chihuahua who was instigating all the fights...we want to get another dog, but I'm scared that our Maltese-mix will hurt a puppy. I'm just wondering if she'd act differently with a male dog, maybe a larger breed would be more intimidating, too??

Female - female dog aggression is a lot more common and it your maltese mix might get along wonderful with a male. I wouldn't reccomend just going out and buying a puppy, though.

You could, however, consider adopting a fixed adult male dog. Go to the SPCA, or a rescue group, and explain your concerns. They may be able to work something out with you.

some dogs just don't get along. It doesn't have to be a size or sex issue. Is your maltese an alpha dog? You can test this by rolling her over on her back and gently holding her down. Does she cry, wiggle, and try to get away? If that is the case, she is not willing to be submissive to you, so she will not be submissive to another dog - no matter what size or sex. If she lays there in expectation of a belly rub, then she is submissive, and should do fine with another dog. If she is the alpha, you can use the same testing technique on a possible new dog, to find one that is submissive. Besides that, take her out and about, and see how she generally reacts to other dogs, this will help clue you in on what may or may not work. Most shelters will allow you to bring a current pet to visit one you are considering adopting, just for the fact they want them to be a good match, so it will be a good home for the new dog. Give that a try.

The probelm you had was same sex aggression and it is very common in all breeds of dogs.
Two females will sometimes fight worse than two males.
The best combination is a male and a female both fixed.
They tend to get along better and have less issues over things and territory than two of the same sex.
Once they establish who is the dominant dog they usually never fight.
The older dog is most often the dominant one.

Males are more docile. Females are more prone to fighting. size of dog doesn't matter. She was there first and will be the Alpha dog.

All dogs fight once in a while. Someone has to be the dominate one or the "pack leader". They are just trying to assert their dominance. just tell them to stop fighting and love each one equally; things will work out ok. Please get them spayed.
