EWW! Walmart sucks, invest in a nice camera and take em your self! Thats what I do.
For a background use a velvet or chenile blanket and hang it. You get nicer pics that way!

I take my 18 month old son and my 7 1/2 month old daughter to WalMart. They take the best pictures at the cheapest prices. If your having trouble with a certain WalMart I would look for another WalMart in your area. They have them every where. It may be just that one WalMart that isn't doing a good job.
I wouldn't give up on WalMart yet.

I have used Olan Mills, WalMart, KMart, Sears and JCPennys. My favorite is Sears, especially when they send out their coupons in the mail. They offer great variety and excellent prices. My experience with WalMart was the worst, behind schedule and not good with kids. Olan Mills is really awexome but expensive.
We're on the East Coast, though. Good luck!

Walmart is only good because they don't make you pay "sitting fees", like other big places such as Sears or JCPenney's. Picture People is a little expensive, but usually worth it -- the photographers are sweet and patient. Personally, I think the best photographs are the ones you take yourself -- they are personal and candid. Those are the times I'd want to remember.

I know Sears, Pennys and most major department stores offer children photos, but I prefer to use Kiddie Kandids, which is available at select Babies R Us Stores. (www.kiddiekandids.com)
I found their staff to be helpful and cheery - trying to keep a toddler happy & looking at the camera is not easy, but they have a whole bucket of toys to do just that!
If you join their birthday club (free) - you get an 8x10 each year, and if you join their mailing list (email) - you can get discount deals (current offer: $9.95 a sheet) --
They have many different backgrounds, borders and styles available and have many different printing options (pictures, aprons, mousepads etc.)
Having not been to any other studio I cannot compare prices, but generally their prices are around $16 a sheet (their sheet combinations are available on their site)
They also have gift certificates available, so you can always ask a family member to chip in for a good gift!
-Best of Luck!-

Try Sears Or JCPenny if you have one. Or get up on the net and look for children photographers in your area. I know in some states that Target also has photo station, and so does K mart. But Honestly I have always liked Sears or JCPenny's and their staff has always been helpful and pleasent.

I usually take my girls to a studio called Kiddie Kandids..they do an awesome job, and they are extremely helpful. They work with little ones all day long, so they have all kinds of tricks up their sleeve to make kids smile and behave. I dont know if they have one around where you live...but I think they are also in some Babies R Us stores.

Picture People is good but pricey. Do you have Sears around you? If so the Sears Portrait Studio does a great job. My friend gets all of her family portraits done there.
