Bad owners make them that way. A friend of mine got a pit puppy that was just the sweetest lil thing, and he tried to make it mean... it was abusive as hell, I called animal control and they came and took the dog, but I don't know that that was any better.

The pitbulls are some of the nicest dogs I have ever met. Most are good family dogs. Loving, protective and loyal dogs. Originally bred to fight other pitbulls. They did not bite humans. Pitbulls are not naturally aggressive toward humans. They are not mean and vicious killers. A vicious man-hater could not be trusted, would not be fought and would not have bred puppies that might share the same disposition. Dogfighting is a dangerous activity for the dog,. Some were horribly scarred and maimed. Others killed or died soon after from their injuries During these dog fights a break would be called. These dogs have been fighting for their life and is probably hurt and you have to pick up this dog and give it some care, the potential for being bitten is great at this time. A dog that could not be handled by the owner, never breed and probably never made it home alive. Like it or not dogfighting has been around for centeries. Human aggressiveness is not natural in the breed. Another group of dogfighters are irresponsible individuals and who care nothing for the breed - these dogs are poorly breed, bad specimens with uncertain heritages. They are human aggresive street dogs and have been trained for viciousness by their vicious owners. The attacks on children and other humans are from these pitbulls. Owners and dogs are equally dangerous. Animal-aggressive behavior is present in many dogs of every size and sort. Pitbulls have been outlawed in many places. A few bad people can do so much harm. A story I heard once is about a pitbull. The animal never bit anyone. The family loved their dog. The children pulled his tail and in return he'd lick their face. The town outlawed the pitbull. The dog was taken from this sad family and put down. I, myself, would have taken my dog and moved far far away. Another story- a little girl, 4 years old was playing in the backyard. Her mom was watching her from the kitchen window. The child sensed no danger. A few houses up the street lived a powerful pit bull lived. He was 7 years old and weighed 45 pounds. Covered in scars from his fighting days. The dog was retired and lived with new owners. He occassionally escaped from the yard and today was such a day.. The dog jumped upon a outdoor grill and cleared the fence. He walked down the street, he noticed movement in the little girls backyard and moved in that direction. The child did not see him enter the yard. She didn't see the intent look on his face. She didn't see him charge toward her. The childs mother saw. The little girl looked up to see the dog running toward her. The dog jumped over the little girl and landed on a large rattlesnake a few feet from the child. The dog killed the snake and was bitten too. The mother ran to the child and the dog did too. The dog began covering the girls face with kisses. The mother ran to them both and embraced the child and dog, a friend for life.

stupid owners its people that make them the way they are i own 3 pitbulls they are the most loveable dogs ive ever had but understand there very powerful and strong minded dogs they need a dominant owner or they will try to dominate you dont be careless like some people a pitbull will protect its owner and property by all means so use common sense bro most people buy them because they want to play the tough guy look big bad *** dog dont mess with me and they are cowards in the first place and dont know nothing about taking care of a dog like a pit pitbulls are not for beginers or intermediate dog owners learn about the breed before you buy and my recomendation is buy a female for the first time and do not buy any other dogs cause if another dog challenges a pitbull they will not back down hope all this info helps

The owners. Pit Bulls get a bad rap because they are a very powerful dog. They have jaws that can break bone and shred skin, they're extrememly fast, and they are almost pure muscle. That is why they are normally used as fight dogs, which is never the dogs fault, it is their human owners that selected them for their brute strength and trained them to be fighters. I have several friends with pitbulls, and they are the sweetest, most gentle dogs I have ever been around. It is a shame that so many states are outlawing these beautiful and caring dogs just because some stupid humans taught the dog to be mean.

It's both if you're referring to their potential to be dangerous towards humans.

Pitbulls (American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Terriers, American Pitbull Terriers, Bull Terriers, ect.) were bred to be fighting dogs. This means they were bred to be tenacious (ie: hold their bite at any cost and don't give up) and have a VERY high prey drive, as well as a distinct aggressiveness towards other animals ...they were also bred to be incredibly obedient to their owners (so they could be controlled while in the ring).

What this means is that a POORLY bred pitbull is certainly more dangerous than a POORLY bred Lab---why? Because the Lab was never bred to be aggressive towards anything---the pitbull was. And a poorly bred pitbulls' aggression can easily translate to people because of the fact that dogs see people as part of their pack (ie: they see people as dogs). A POORLY bred pitbull is dangerous regardless if the owner is responsible or not.

A WELL BRED pitbull, on the other hand, is no more dangerous towards humans than any other breed and can be incredibly loyal and obedient provided its owner is smart and understands the breed. A responsible owner with a well bred pitbull is one of the best pairs in the dog world---the pitbull can be the perfect dog for most so long as people understand why they were bred and provide the necessary boundaries that make the pitbull feel comfortable and stable (ie: training).

A stupid owner with a WELL BRED pitbull still spells disaster because they're taking advantage of the pitbulls loyalty and obedience and probably training the dog to behave in an unacceptable way. A stupid owner with a POORLY bred pitbull---well, those are the ones you see in the newspapers biting people.

Pitbulls CANNOT LOCK THEIR JAWS. No dog can. Don't listen to such claims. The pitbull jaw is no different than any other dog breed---the difference is that the pitbulls' tenacity prevents it from letting go at any cost--they were bred to not let go, no matter what. That is why the pitbull WHEN it bites, is particularly more dangerous and why it's the breed that results in the most dog bite FATALITIES (the breed that bites the most is the lab).

So, basically, if you have a well bred pitbull, it's no more dangerous than any other dog towards people, provided it doesn't have a stupid owner. Pitbulls pass temperment tests at a 95% success rate. The average for all breeds is in the 70% range. IF the pitbull decides to be dangerous (because of poor breeding or a stupid owner), then it IS the most dangerous breed...

Owners. There are any number of breeds that can be trained / taught to be mean - the pit bull is often chosen because it is muscular and powerful, making it very dangerous if trained that way. My wife's family had a pit bull when she was growing up and it was a very friendly dog.

It is all a matter of their breeding and upbringing. You can raise a dog to be friendly and well-mannered just as you can raise one to attack and be aggressive.
However, damage can even be done while the pups are still with the mother dog. If she is aggressive and nasty.... the pups learn this behavior while they are still nursing.
People say they are more dangerous because their jaws lock however.... what danger would that pose if the dog is a well-adjusted canine good citizen.
I know quite a few Pit bulls that are therapy dogs. It's just bad publicity that makes the breed as a whole look bad. Personally, I would be more fearful of a Chihuahua than a Pit. But that is my experience and opinion.

Pit bulls are of the Terrier breed and genetically have a more irritable and aggressive temperament than many other breeds, like Collies or Labradors. However, a lot depends on how they are raised and trained. Raised with love and affection, a pit bull can be a very lovable and loving family pet. My cousin had one and it was just a playful goober. Still, any pit bull can become a frightening marauder if aggression-trained, because it will draw out the latent hostile tendancy that's in their genes. For that reason, a pit bull is not my first choice for a family pet.

Pit Bulls are no more vicious than a poodle. The owners are the ones making them more aggressive. I have 2 English Mastiffs and with their size most people believe them to be dangerous but they aren't. The local kids actually wrestle with them. Its really all in how you raise them.

Stupid owners make it that way. With the right owner a pit is the best dog you can have.
