It's called kneading. The name comes from the motion of the paws; it looks like they're making a loaf of bread.
It stems from kittenhood. Kittens knead on their mother's belly to help get milk out of the nipple. As adults, it's comforting to them. Much like someone who never grows out of sucking their thumb.

ROFL! Bing-bing??? Where did you come up with that one? Anyway, you are talking about kneading. It's the same word that you use to describe what you do to dough when you bake bread. Anyway, kneading is an undesirable behavior left over from kittenhood. It usually happens when kittens are removed from their mothers too soon and do not get properly weaned. When a kitten nurses, it kneads its mother's belly to stimulate lactation and milk flow. Adult cats who were not properly weaned will continue to do this to whatever surface they choose to rest on, whether it's a human lap, a bed or whatever. The behavior is sometimes accompanied by suckling, but this must be strongly discouraged. The kneading part alone, however, is harmless. It comforts the cat. It's not an expression of love, it's just one of those habits carried over from kittenhood. You can kind of compare it to thumb sucking in school age children. ,,,^..^,,,

My cats do the same thing. I always think they're just making the bed for themselves. I know when kittens are still nursing on a momma cat, they'll do that near the momma cats teets to get the milk out. It may have something to do with that. Cats are a huge mystery.

Bing-bing... that's a new one. I call it "making cookies." My cat Rudy does it all the time... it's a sign of contentment, like purring. Kittens do that instinctively to get their mother's milk flowing, so it's a way of showing they're comfortable and content when they're older.

Are you referring to a kneeding movement...(We call it making biscuits) I read a book that said that cats do that when they are in their mother's womb..So your cat is expressing her content with you..
