or is it simply the neural activity preparing the body for death?

The most common similarity of NDE's is the feeling of peace, tranquility, spirituality, and oneness with all. This occurrence has been discovered to be associated with the release of endorphins as well as reactions between the right and left superior parietal lobe. The right portion of this area of the brain is known to be responsible for the sense of physical space and body awareness. The left portion of the parietal lobe is responsible for the awareness of the self. During an NDE neural activity in these areas shuts down. The result of this is an inability for the mind to have distinction between the self and non-self. However, other aspects of the brain are still functioning and thoughts are occurring. These other thoughts are believed to be associated with the visions perceived.

so what do you think?

No, especially since one can be duplicated with drugs. Ketamine specifically.

I wouldn't think that a NDE would tell much of anything. If religion was real and it was not the person's time to die, then how could one say that they went to heaven for a short period and then returned? Besides, I am sure that a lot of non Christians have had NDE's and I have never heard of anyone describing one as scary, or having images of the devil or the lake of fire.

I would chalk that up to the body going into some sort of shock which is medically proven to make your brain go loopy. Tranquility is a condition that can come when your mind and or body is not functioning properly (i.e. being drunk or on some kinds of drugs) as is hallucinating so I don't think that is proof of an afterlife at all.

I don't need stories of NDE's to know there is life after death. I am convinced there is life after death for one reason: Jesus Christ died and was placed in a tomb—and three days later came back to life.

Think about it a moment: What would it take to prove to us that there is life after death? The answer is clear: Someone would have to die, and then come back to life again. It wouldn't be enough for them to have a so-called "near-death" experience; their death would have to be real. And it wouldn't be enough for only one or two people to see them; it would require many witnesses.

But has this ever happened? Yes—when Jesus Christ rose from the grave! His death was real; hard-bitten Roman guards made sure He was dead before they took Him down from the cross. And His resurrection was real also, because hundreds saw Him during the next forty days. Paul, writing over 25 years later, noted that "he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living" (1 Corinthians 15:6).

How could this happen? It happened because Jesus Christ was not just another man. He was God's only Son, sent from heaven to save us from our sins. Only He could say, "I am the resurrection and the life. ... Whoever lives and believes in me will never die" (John 11:25-26). This can be your hope, by giving your life to Christ today.

Actually, as far as I know, there is no empirical proof of an afterlife. We are left to believe in it, by faith alone.

On the other hand, that's probably a good thing. Imagine if you will, you knew that as long as you got "absolved of your sins" you would still go to a "happy place". I mean, if we had proof. People would be willing to sacrifice themselves, and cause problems simply because they knew for a fact that they could get to paradise.

So far, no proof of a past life, telepathy, or a soul has stood up to empirical study so far. It would probably be pretty frightening if we could!

I won't be qualified to speak until I have one. I rather hope I never have one, though!

My husband had a bad crash a few years ago. As he was laying on the pavement, he heard a voice in his head telling him to get up. He knew that it meant if he stayed down he would die.

That's not the usual scenario for these things, and I don't know what it means. It could very well have been his subconscious talking.

Then what about the after effects? Following a near death experience, (my father died 2 nights in a row) he returned to say goodbye to me before he had another experience and did not return. A nurse was very surprised at how cognizant he was on the following day when I visited. She commented people who experience death usually return less lucid. He knew what he saw and he knew he would not return the next time his heart gave out.
