In addition to some of the above:
Will they make a house call in an emergency?
Can you get in without an appointment in an emergency?
What is their coverage during "non office" hours, weekends, holidays?
Is there anyone present in the hospital area to care for animals left overnight?
What is their procedure should an animal need to be euthanized - are you allowed to remain with the pet?
How many of the employees have pets of their own (in the waiting area of our vet, there are pictures of all the staff with their pets).
I know most of these focus on the "not so happy" aspects of dealing with a vet - these are the times you really need to know they will go the extra mile for you and your family.

If its just for basics any vet tech can do most any of it.
Make sure you like the other people in the office, techs, receptionist, hospital area. These are the ones that really take care of your pet if its hospitalized. Just as if you were in the hospital the Dr comes and makes his rounds daily and may talk to you for 10-15 minutes.
Check with local rescues on what they think about the vets. We know more than our share. If each volunteer hasn't worked with one we have another volunteer that does. We all have our own brood of animals plus the hundreds we rescue that have to have vet care. I often give people different vets according to what they need.

ask about prices too. the vet may be really good, but if you can't afford him, then you need to shop around. i visited my vet first and met the staff. i have been with them for 3 years even after moving to another side of town.

I picked my vet by reputation. I asked around and lots of people said they were great. It's a husband and wife. She does the small critters (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and things like rabbits and hamsters) and her husband does livestock.
They have wonderful staff. They work flexible hours for those of us that work or have other obligations like kids (I don't have kids though). The staff is also very knowledgable.
I think it's best you ask people in your area who they go to and how they like them.
