I think alot of it has to do with todays society viewing spanking or phsically punishing your child as "Abuse" everyone thinks you should "talk it out" or take some sort of relaxed approached like go in time out or sit in your room, which is bull...
when i did something wrong i got spanked with a belt or told to go pick a switch... and if i did the same thing wrong again the punishment was more spankings... you learn quick not to do that again...
everyone is too judgemental of other peoples business and it gets out of hand. There are some degrees of punishment that should not happen and are abuse but COME ON... really If my kid starts screaming in the grocery store cause i dont get him some candy hes getting 3 seconds before he gets spanked...

I don't think it has anything to do with how parents discipline so much as the fact that families aren't close anymore. Children are raised by their peers all day and then come home to an empty house or are carted off to nightly after school activities and then you have to factor in homework. It breaks my heart that there has to be a damn billboard advertising for families to eat dinner together once a week.
Driving children everywhere 5-6 days a week to do stuff with other kids is ridiculous. Parents, teens and children do not know each other anymore and it has caused a breakdown in the American family. IMHO, I believe that things are so bad because children are raising each other as well as the tv. Parents have neglected their responsibilities because they want 'stuff' and to be able to afford a big house, big car, with lots of 'stuff' and then to compensate for not being there or not spending time with their children they buy them 'stuff' and then the vicious cycle of "Working to have things at the price of the family" will continue on to the next generation.
It's not the children's fault...it is the parents. And now we have a generation of children that can barely appreciate the beauty of simplicity and the basics and one that seems (for the most part) to only find joy when they have things or are constantly having something to do.

After listening to things my dad and my grandfather did in there day, It was worse then most things done today. I can't believe some of the stuff they would do and get away with. Things are so much more publicized and criticized these days, that any little thing is so blown out of proportion. The only thing worse now then it was, is kids killing each other. That is mostly because both parents have to work and aren't as involved in there childrens lives as it was 30-60 years ago.

I used to be a preschool teacher and let me tell you, today's youth are getting worse and worse! They are picking up nasty habits, and becoming increasingly rebellious and rude! I am only 23 years old, and even I can see a HUGE difference between children today and when I was growing up. I would NEVER even think about cursing at my parents or being rude to them in the manor that kids do today. and I NEVEr would, I wish I thought I could call my mom a b*tch or my dad an A**hole! Not only would I lose conscientousness for a while, but when I woke up, my mom would prolyl slap me again!
I know they say that spanking is bad or whatever, but I gotta tell you, some kids need a good *** wooping. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to pop some one else's kid in the mouth for being rude to their parents, and the worst part is that the parents take it! I would never stand for that sort of disrespect, especially not from my child. And if they do that in public, you know they are even worse at home.
So Parents, in short, don't be afraid to pop or pluck or smack that *** when your kid gets out of line. As a person who loves and respects and cherishes her parents, and who only had to get spanked ONCE in her life...trust me, its in everyone's best interest!

This is such a good question. I struggle with boundaries with my 4.5 yr step son. His father and I are liberal and do not want to be too restrictive or authoritarian. That said, it is difficult to know. I believe a child needs their own independence and freedom to a point which just borders on annoyance for an adult. It is so subjective, however. I think everyone has different limits and ideas about what is acceptable. I know a little about parenting styles and both permissive and authoritarian are destructive.

Different society today, no respect from most of them though I do know some who are pretty well behaved. Most children are bored nothing much for them to do except play computer games or hang around in gangs not many clubs for them to go to , lot of community centres closed down.

Unfortunately, parents can't discipline their children like they used to. Today, spanking is a form of abuse, so children don't have any boundaries. I taught my kids respect and yet I told them I loved them all the time. It was an even balance. They all turned out pretty awesome!

You're not kidding! When I was growing up kids didn't hang around intimidating people in the evenings, spitting, swearing etc. And it's only going to get worse as these yobs start breeding (at an early age!) It is the decline of society.
The solution is JESUS!

depends how long ago since you grew up. todays society is different. parents who have to go out to earn a decent standard of living maybe dont always have control over what thier kids are doing. but not all kids are bad.

Society? we have a society today? where?
Everyone is afraid to correct kids, and we will pay the price in Ted Bundy's and Manson's in the very-near future!
That's one of the main reasons I homeschooled my kids.
2 Timothy 3:13 (A-KJV)
But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
