Tour length depends on what branch you're in.
Marines & Army: 12 - 18 months.
Air Force: 4-6 months. Air Force personnel imbedded with the Army sometimes stay for a year.
Tours can be lengthened at a moment's notice, too, based on mission and personnel requirements.
The normal cycle is 15 months off between tours, but it can be less than that nowadays due to the war on terrorism.

When my husband left on his first tour he was told it would be 6-12 months. He was gone 15. His second tour he was told 12-18 months, and he was gone 10. The average army tour is 12 months, the other services go for shorter times. The Marines I think do 6 months and the Air Force does about 4. These are the tours in Iraq, I think to Afghanistan it may be different.
Most active duty soldiers who have been in the military for the entire war are on their 2nd or 3rd year-long tour in the middle east.

Army: 12-18 months
Marine Corps: 7 months
Navy: 7 months
Air Force: 4 months
Kind of surprising is that those in the Air Force are most likely to do a second tour into a combat zone. While the Marine Corps is the least likely to go back for a 2nd tour. Which is probably the complete opposite of what people think. Don't laugh, look it up.

It definately does vary depending on the branch of service. My son is a Marine and they are not supposed to be deployed longer than 7 months. Our city here has major Air Force base and a large number of Army National Guard and Reserves. The Army goes for 12-18 months and many of the Air Force deployments last about 3 weeks.

My husband is over now and this is his 3rd time in 4 years. He's Airforce and their tours are usually 6 months now. Army and most other branches are longer... 12-18 months. I think you go over as many times as your needed... especially if the base you are has a high deployment rate.

Depends. My friend was there (Iraq) when it first started for 1 year. Then he was state side for almost a year and then he was back over there for 6 months. After that he was home for a year and now he's out.
I think it depends on the branch of the military and even the division and where they're stationed.

USAF = 4 month deployments.
This is promoted through our AEF cycles. Extended is 6 months and a 12 month deployment is highly unlikely, but it has occurred. It is usually associated with a committment to a career field that isn't the norm. i.e. Special Forces.

Depends on the branch. Air Force only deploys their troops for 120 days at a time, I know the army is more like 180 days, and I am not sure about the Marines and Navy.
