I think this might be it. It's part of a book entitled:-

The Secret To Hitting Every Goal, Every Time
By: Laura Posey

Think about what you would really like to do when you hit your goal. What do you want to buy or do that you really, really want? Do you want to take a trip? Do you want to buy a new wardrobe?

Do you know who it's by? If you know who said the quote, you could more easily find it. I put "don't apply for a job if you have to buy a new wardrobe" in Yahoo, Google, and Ask Jeeves and didn't find it. Sorry I couldn't be more help, but I've not heard the quote before.

yahoo answers has a specific category dealing with quotations,
that may be your best bet
does it end with
'you may not be suited for it?'
