Because people think that all women like to spend money, so they pick the tackiest dress for bides maids and say that you HAVE to get that specific one to go with the rest of the wedding party. BUT I am one of those women who was offered a brides made position I would make it clear that if I Had to spend the hundreds or sometime thousands on a dress that I would never wear again, I would refuse to be a bridesmaid. I would rent one or make it myself rather than spend money on it. But if it was a beautiful dress that I would have no problem with wearing it again, then I would buy it from some other place that had it cheaper. I would research the hell out of that dress before I forked over the money. I hate shopping and dresses any way.
I also had my wedding dress made for me, and it looks like sh!t! I hate that dress. The person who made it, made it her way, not mine, and she didn't even come to the wedding, she was invited, lived five minutes away, and just said she didn't feel like going. If I had the option to redo it, I would. I'd make it this time. But, people suck

Because women's shapes and sizes vary so much, that formal wear usually needs to be altered in order to fit each different woman. Guys don't vary so much, so they can rent off the rack. And the variety of dresses to choose from would be even worse than what you see in the bridal stores, because rental places wouldn't be able to stock every dress out there in every color and in every size.
And renting a tux isn't always cheaper than buying the dress.

I only paid 550 for my dress and it looked like i paid thousands for it. Although my hubby who is in the Marines had to paid over 400 for his dress blues for the wedding.
I would have loved to be able to rent a dress but in the area that I live in rental dresses are not pretty at all (they look like they came from the mid 80's) Also dresses used to be passed down to the first marrried daughter so they were more of an investment.

Actually, women can rent their wedding dresses, too. Granted, it will cost more than tux rental, but it's possible. My wife did that. She spent nearly $1,000 to rent what was surely a $5,000+ dress. Smartest savings of the entire wedding!
But, no question, guys have it better in this regard!

Because people don't know what's proper any more-- they're mixing formal with semi-formal and all kind of nonsense because they are "etiquette illiterate".
Ideally women would own and wear their semiformal dresses and men would OWN and wear their suits (not tuxes, for semi-formal!). But weddings these days have bcome a non-sensical mishmosh of semiformal dresses on women and formal rented tuxes on men-- not to mention the guests come in all kinds of terrible clothing.
People in this country have become clueless asshats.

Women can rent dresses and have been able to for years. The women who buy, want their own dress, to keep, cherish and have altered to fit them perfectly. I would have never rented a dress. I have been married for 10 years and still have my wedding gown. I like to look at it from time to time.

You can rent too, and no one will know.
Also, many men buy a tux to own and wear when they have formal functions to go to. I will either buy an inexpensive beachy dress for my wedding or rent a dress.

Some women rent dresses I believe. Some buy 2nd hand dresses or make their own too.

Neither are a "have to" anymore. Lots of guys just wear a suit, and if a woman wants the traditional gown, lots of places rent now. Hope that answer helps solve your bitterness.
