I think there should be a mandatory national service requirement for everybody. Military service could be one option, along with VISTA, etc. It should start when you turn 18, unless you're in school...in which case you'd be allowed to graduate first.

Yes and no. It would help out the military and turn around some kids lives, but it would also cause some problems. Some kids would be so unwilling to go and would just be a big baby and refuse to do anything in boot camp. Israel has a 2 year mandatory for the military, and it has supposedly done great things.

There are good and bad points to both sides of this issue.
A volunteer army is much better than a slave army.
Wealthy men and women are not sucked into the monetary rewards and benefits as easy.
I would say I like a volunteer Army better.
See "The 300 Spartans".
SIDENOTE: What was that movie, where the guy was not allowed in space because he was a paraplegic and could not walk? He was not "able-bodied", but nobody really needs legs in space anyway. Why discriminate against the handicapped?

there is plenty to this answer i could no longer probable clarify it right here, yet i visit do my desirable. I do think of each able bodied and qualified American Male could be made to serve earlier heading to college. There are some explanation why that's clever. After serving 2 years of honorable provider you will possibly have funds for faculty and could depend much less on loans and financial help and fogeys for funds for faculty. additionally i think of that people would be extra helpful utilising the kit that the militia aspects. of path, those skills is basically no longer used or utilized by utilising anybody, yet those that be responsive to the magnitude of discipline, no longer common paintings, dedication, satisfaction, honor, integrity, and excellance will do plenty extra useful in school and life in customary than people who have no graasp of such issues. i'm no longer saying which you won't be able to get those features everywhere, yet interior the militia they are demanded. you reside right here and it is your duty as a citizen to guard what that's you adore approximately this united states. I assure anybody has some thing they love approximately u . s . a .. despite if it so straightforward as they hate the place they got here from. u . s . a . is impressive and people could % to combat for that. i think thas it for now i could desire to edit the respond later however

Absolutely NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
An ALL-VOLUNTEER Military is one of our greatest strengths.
If you start drafting men (and women) who don't want to be there you are opening a whole can of worms that will destroy our armed services.
Yes we have people in the service now who don't want to be there but they CHOSE to be there. They CHOSE for the wrong reasons maybe but they DID chose. When you start putting people in there that NEVER wanted to be there. You get trouble, you get morale breaking down. you get people who will not do their jobs and others will get killed for it because the military is a very unforgiving place for mistakes and everyone must count on everyone else to do their job right.
YES I too think people living in this country should be willing to defend it. YES I do think serving in the military is a character building experiance. I too think everyone (Especially our youth) will have a lot to gain from the military. Honesty, Integrety, Discipline, and much more.
But to FORCE that on them will be counterproductive. These people should WANT to join. not be FORCED to join.
Ask yourself this question... Who do you want guarding you as you sleep at night.
VOLUNTEER: "Sleep well for I have the watch and nothing is going to happen tonight. Not on my watch"
or the DRAFTEE:" Man, I didn't ask to be here. I don't want to be here. Hell with them. Im going to go F off somewhere. let the other guys stand watch"
Who do YOU want watching over you and your loved ones at night?

No, everyone isn't willing to fight and its not just because of fear. Some of us think independenly and will not march off to a war just because someone tells us to. Some of us only fight when our lives are in danger, as we all should. Some of us are willing to fight for a cause if it is a just one.

It'd be nice, but I don't agree with it. One of the reasons our military is so powerful is that it's voluntary. Each of the soldiers we have WANT to be soldiers.

it is no longer voluntary with the "back door" draft.
If there was a draft, we would never been the middle of a war that now even Bush admits was sort of wrong.
