Not all male dogs do, and a few female dogs will...but, it is mostly a male dog thing..
The breed I raise is generally a female dominated breed, and a few of my most dominant females have done this..

Males are the ones that lift their legs to pee. They try to get the pee up high, because that is where the noses are. Both males and females leave urine for other dogs to smell. Dogs can detect the mood, the sex, and the heat cycle of the females just by smelling urine left by other dogs..

No, it's usually just the male dogs that do that (I've met a little female Bichon that lifted her leg like a male though once). I've heard that if you get a male dog neutered before they learn to hike their leg, that they will never hike it.

Nope not all, my dog a male, we had him fixed when he was younger when he still squatted. The vet said if we got him fixed early enough he wouldn't hike his leg to pee......Well he didn't for a long time and now he only does when he is in his kennel outside and doesn't want to get pee in it he hikes his leg to pee out the side... smart dog....but when he is out he squats to pee just like when he was a puppy.....cool huh....maybe.....lol...

No not all dogs. Most males do but not all. I had my basset hound fixed before he ever hiked his leg and therefore does not hike his leg now.

NO. All young dogs squat. When they get a little older, in general the males lift their legs and the females squat. But I have seen females lift legs and males squat also. Why??

No, I have a male dog who doesn't lift his leg to pee though, he squats like a girl...

Only males, guess it come from them having their hardware on the outside. Also, not all males hike. They only do it if they have seen others in their "pack" do it.
