This is a very tough question. Two of my favorites are Dickey Chapelle & Ansel Adams. There are just too many wonderful photographers for me to chose from in recent years. Check out the links if you're interested in seeing more photos by many people, at least in the 2nd addy.

Steve McCurry takes fantastic portraits, he took that famous picture of the Afghani girl with the green eyes from National Geographic magazine. I also love Sebastiao Salgado, his photos are really moving. Henri Cartier-Bresson is another favourite of mine because I love candid/'defining moment' photos. Also Margaret Bourke-White's photo-journalism and industrial pics are pretty amazing.
