Depends on the Dogs and the Cat.

I have 2 Goldens and 5 Cats. The dogs only chase some of the cats. Basically the ones that run. The is even one (black with white paws) which will hang right with the dogs and even lick them.

Cats can usually keep dogs in there place one of two way.

1. A quick swat on the nose with the claws.
2. Not running away.

Most of the time it's because the cats run so the dog will chase it. This starts up the prey drive in the dogs. My cat has grown up around dogs, so he doesn't run when a dog approaches him and the dogs just keep on walking. He LOVES to play with my dogs though, he goes up to them when they are lying down and paw at their butts and then runs and turns to see if the dogs are going to chase him. If they don't he'll go back and do it again.........hehehe

My dog wants to attack cats or anything small that moves fast, oh like other dogs, squirrels, or little creatures of the sorts...I think it is just a thing they do! It is part of being a dog! It is a game to them to see if they can get it, you know fun for them like playing sports is to us! I really don't have or know of any other reason than that! Just a sport or game they play!

It's fun to them. Most breeds love to chase and play and love to "tree" smaller creatures. It is the prey drive that kicks in. It is just natural instinct. Some breeds of dogs have a higher prey drive then others. A hunting breed for example even if the dog has never been hunting in its life is more likely to chase a smaller animal than say a companion breed. Regardless of the breed though all dogs have an instinctual drive to chase.

Because they run and the dogs enjoy chasing them. I have both dogs and cats, and when they know each other they get along fine, but if the cat runs the dog will chase.

I dog, naturally, will not attack a cat unless it;s owner trains it to do so (which normally means the pet owner hates cats). I've seen tons of dogs that do not attack cats.

First, where are you getting your stats? "Most of the times?" I disagree.

Second, dogs are predatory animals. Cats are smaller than most dogs; they move quickly. Therefore, they look like prey. You are correct that most dogs don't need to hunt to get their food. However, this behavior is still deeply rooted and is not likely to go away. It's the same reason that they chase squirrels, bikes, and tennis balls.
