Actually, I have an even better suggestion. Kittens ALWAYS find homes. Everybody wants a kitten, but so few people give the adult cats a 2nd chance at love. The animal shelters in this country are filled with young adult cats that get surrendered in pairs. How wonderful would it be if you could adopt a pair of young adult cats (around 3 years old) and keep them together!??? And let me tell you something else...kittens are a ROYAL pain in the behind. If you are not an experienced cat person, you have a lot of work ahead of you. They're not quite as difficult as puppies, but they are naughty with a capital N! And they are anything but calm. Adult cats are just so much more mellow and well-behaved. You will also be saving a ton of money in vet costs because the cats that are surrendered to shelters have probably already had all their shots, been spayed/neutered, dewormed etc. Sometimes people are forced to give up wonderful, loving pets because they move, because their landlords make them, or because they end up with a spouse or child that has allergies. Go to your local shelter and find a pair of cats that when you open the cage, they meow at you and say, "Won't you please rescue us? Get us out of this jail and let us show you our appreciation and love???" That's what you should do! And gender doesn't matter. A pair of cats that are used to one another will make wonderful pets for you. Good luck!

getting two guarantees you a busy household. They will keep each other, as well as you entertained. As for boys/girls - get which ever ones have the personality that suits you. If you can get litter mates, as then they will grow up together. It's just about the end of kitten season, so if you really want two, you need to start checking around in your local shelters. Make sure they are in good health, and don't get them too young. I foster for a rescue group, and it's best for you to get kittens that are 10 / 12 weeks of age, because you can really see if they are healthy. I have been fostering a mama and 5 kittens, got them when they were only 10 days old, and even with the best in vet care, 2 passed away. Young kittens are just very susceptible to so many illnesses, that you could get a 6 or 8 week old kitten, that in just a few days time, could be sick. That's just personal advise to prevent heartache. I have 3 ready for adoption now - wish you were close by! Contact your local Petsmart, as they work with shelters and rescue groups so they will be able to direct you to a reputable organization.

I would deffeniently get two. The sex shouldn't matter if you are getting them fixed. If you raise them together, they should always get along. Mine have and I have had many cats over the years. Currently I have five. One of theolder ones currently does not like the newest kitten that I brought in about 2 months ago. She growls every time she sees the kitten. Normally they out grow it. Hopefully this will happen soon. They are the only two females. Maybe that is why. Who knows.

If you are going to be home all the time, you should get one. If you are going to be away a lot, get two. It doesn't matter if you get two boys, two girls, or one of each - they should be spayed or neutered anyway. I have 2 girls, myself, and they don't seem to be fighting. They play together, sleep together, and bathe each other... no problem there...lol Cats can get lonely by themselves all the time. This will sometimes result in "bad" behaviour. Peeing on your stuff, tearing your house apart... I've seen this happen. No matter what you decide, make sure you put them on a good quality food. There are special foods for cats so that they don't get deadly cysts and die of kidney failure. Cheap, low-quality food with tons of ash are bad for cats in general. Get the best food you can afford. Go to your local pet store and explain your situation to them before you get your kittens, then you're more prepared.
Now, aside ffrom all of that... have fun! Kittens are a joy and that time unfortunately just doesn't last long enough.
Good Luck

Getting two is a good idea. Two boys or one of each (fixed like you said) would be good. Don't get two females though, as they will fight a whole lot more than the other combos. We have a 4 month old kitten and I really wish we'd gotten two, as he is a little terror on his own because he gets bored. People say cats are loners, but they get lonely and like company as much as any other animal.

If you can afford two, I'd go with it. Especially since you'll be working, it will give them each company while you're gone. And cats tend to do better in pairs.
As far as the sex, if you're getting them as kittens, that won't matter. You could try getting siblings....they'll already be used to each other:) That being said, you could find ADULT cats who were raised in the same household who won't have a problem with each other, either. I prefer getting adults because they have a harder time finding good homes. I adopted my male last year (he was about 2 at the time), and I just adopted a 3 year old female.

I don't know about cats, but dogs prefer companionship and it helps keep them out of trouble if they have some one to play with. I'm sure this also applies to cats.
Along with the 'fixing' get them declawed and keep them in the house/apartment. Too many people like to hurt, kill, or run them over.
Create train them early, you don't have to keep them in it, just be sure you let them get used to it and keep them used to it. It'll help a lot when you take them to the vet if they aren't afraid of the crate.
As long as they're fixed, one female and one male should get along fine. Two of the same sex should get along fine also. A friend of mine has two females and they're great together. Do try to get litter mates, though. They already know each other and shouldn't have a first time fight for dominance, they'll already have this worked out.

I had the same question when my husband and I decided to get one. We ended up deciding to get two when we were at the animal shelter. I got two girls the same age and they get along pretty well. They're complete opposites of each other so it kind of balances out. They sometimes play a little rough, but one is more of a crybaby and the other one is more of I'm tough. I would go with two, I don't think it really matters if you get two of the same or one of each.

We have 4 cats, and got them all as kittens, I agree you should get 2 kittens, but I will warn you that they may form their primary bond with each other and not be as close to you as you might want. Our youngest is now 2 and we have two 4-year old cats who were adopted one month apart as babies, they are all bonded to each other very strongly, and it took a long time for them to get cozy with their humans cus they had each other..........so its good to have 2 or more kitties all together, but it might delay their interest in you as the primary bond. Our 4th cat is almost age 18 and acts like the momcat to all the 3..............all four of our cats are female.

Yes, I wouldl definitely get two of about the same age, so they can play with each other and enjoy each other's company while you are at work. The sex doesn't matter as long as you have them fixed.
I think your idea is great and shows a lot of caring on your part.
