Dandruff can be caused by both a dry scalp or an oily scalp. When you have an oily scalp, the oils coat the skin so that, as the dead cells try to slough off, they become trapped and then form flakes that resemble true dandruff. If it is caused by an oily scalp, you should try using clarifying shampoos that really strip out the oils that coat the hair shaft and scalp. Regular shampoo won't always get that oil off. Also, stay away from moisturizing formulas that you might use for a dry scalp. When conditioning your hair, only condition it at the ends where it's needed. Don't use a leave-in conditioner either.

I had this problem for years until a friend gave me some good advice.
Use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner (ones formulated for very dry hair/scalp).
Most dandruff shampoos are very drying and actually make the problem worse.
When you shampoo massage and gently scratch the scalp to loosen dead skin cells. Rinse thoroughly. You can shampoo again if you like but don't scratch too hard as this may break your fragile skin on your scalp(this will lead to itchy scalp and sores) which sounds quite unhealthy if you have a dandruff for a long time.
Make sure all shampoo is thoroughly rinsed out.
Apply generous amount of conditioner massaging through the hair and on your scalp.
Leave for 5 mins or so. Rinse out.
When your hair is a little damp or dry comb your hair with slight emphasis of runningthe teeth of the comb along your scalp.
Dandruff is caused by a very dry scalp which left untreated will lead to cracking, sores, excessive shedding of skin and irritation.
Moisturisation for me was the key.
I'm a guy with shortish hair and I shampoo and condition EVERY day. This is what works for me and I don't suffer from chronic dandruff anymore.
Good luck

Ok, this might seem really strange given that you may or may not be caucasian. But go to your nearest "black" beauty store, and buy some anti-itch formula hair grease. If you can't locate it, don't be afraid to ask a clerk for some help. But if you are easily embarrassed. Just go to where they have their black hair products and read the labels till you find something that says "anit-itch".
Rub it in at night. DO NOT put it all over your hair. Put the focus on your scalp. In the morning wash with a tea tree based shampoo and conditioner. you should also be able to find that in the same store (sally's beauty supply for example).
if this doesn't help i don't know what to tell you. i have many friends i've suggested it to, and they swear by my way.
i really hope this helps you.

My suggestion to you is, if you have seen a doctor, and they couldn't prescribe something for you to use, or they did and it didn't work, it could be something other than dandruff....have you tried neutogena t-gel shampoo??? If you have, I would try paul mitchell Tea tree shampoo and conditioner. If that doesn't work, I would go to a different doctor. Good luck
