You can buy any gun, that is considered legal in your area. So you should have no problem getting a shotgun, although they may have a waiting period. So try to get it well before you need it. At 18 you can buy a shotgun. You will have to fill out the federal BATF 4473 form and pass a background check.

as long as your incident with the law. if it was a felony you are prohibited to buy a gun. if not go buy the gun. have to wait until you are 21 to buy a handgun

All you have to do is go to the gunstore and they will sell you one. You can buy any rifle shotgun or carbine legal in your state.
