When something really important to you is lost it really hurts bad. And it is very difficult to recover from that loss.

Others have provided an answer faster and more informational than me, however-

At one time in history (And at some places today) you could (/can) return coke bottles to get a nickel each- as a reward for recycling- a gimmick to get you to do it. This saying says if your bottle's broken, you don't get a reward for it, therefore saying something along the lines of 'Even the smallest things can go wrong, and we can all lose from them'.

If you break the coke bottle, they won't give you a nickle for returning it. You can't return the bottle for money if it's broken.

Back in the day when Cokes (or sodas, or pops, or whatever your regional dilect dictates that you call them) were produced they came in bottles. They tasted a lot better back then too. When you were finished, you could return the coke bottle and receive a nickel. I can't believe I'm old enough to have experienced this. Wow. I'm not young anymore.

In the past was very common to be charged as a deposit for the bottles, even now some stores do that, but is not as common as it used to be.

In that case, bottles must not be broken, otherwise they didn't give you back what you paid as a deposit for that bottle.

That means if someone was trying to return a beer bottle for a 5 cent refund, and the bottle was broken, they wouldnt be eligible for a refund.

I believe it means that you have to take care of what you have, if you don't, it becomes worthless. Even the little things.
