My wife and I are flying in to Macarthur Airport, but we want to visit manhattan where we will stay in a hotel for about 4 days. We could rent a car for around $160 and would have free parking, but I am wondering if there is any sort of transportation service that would be a better deal to and from the airport. Is it worth it to get a rental car?

Mac Field, as it has been known forever, is at exit 60 of the Long Island Expressway, otherwise known as the LIE or Long Island Parking Lot. Avoid it until after 10 in the morning and after 3 in the afternoon unless you have the patience of a saint. The good news is that you are going in the opposite direction of traffic in the afternoon. The difficult issue is what you are going to do with a rental car in Manhattan. Although it is not as bad as some suggest, it IS expensive to park. I suggest that you check with your hotel as I think all in Manhattan charge extra for a car.
Personally, if you insist on Manhattan, I would take a limousine to your hotel and a cab or tour transport around town. Call your hotel and ask about a service which may be either free or at a discount.
My real advice to you is to go the other direction and visit the east end of the 128 mile island. The south fork, where the Hamptons are is also a way to Montauk point and the wonderful lighthouse. There are also some great wineries out there and on the North Fork. Fire Island is a good visit also, but at this season it will be questionable as to what is open. It is also heavily "alternative lifestyle" but still quite lovely. Make sure you visit Jones Beach and see what beautiful beach it really is, barring overcrowding and medical waste washing in: in all fairness, the latter probably doesn't occur any more.

From McArtur take the shutlle to the Long Island Railroad and take that in to Grand Central Station in Manahttan. If you need a cheap room try Super 8 Times Square hotel. $200.00/night and it's cheap. Right near subway, Grand Central, Rockefellar Center, Times Square. Check them out on Tripadvisor.com Also go to MTA.ORG the NYC Port Authority web site. Has maps.
