You can find the basic info on the website.

http://www.atkins.com

You can find additional information at

http://www.atkinsalltheway.com/index.php

and

http://forum.lowcarber.org/

Why can't you buy the book? I got my copy second-hand at the used book shop. The book is the best source of info.

i've done the atkins a couple of times and each time get great results. You just have to remember to stay away from white food. such as bread, pasta, potatoes, etc. You can eat all the meat, cheese, and eggs that you want. you can also eat some veggies such as lettuce, cucumbers and LOTS of ranch! remember low fat items are not good because it substitutes ingredients and adds more carbs. if you like ranch get the regular kind. There are lots of low carb candy by russel stovers. Keep in mind for the next 2 weeks have 24 or less carbs a day. you can also go to www.lowcarbcooking.org and there are lots of different receipes on there. Good luck to yoU! i've lost 10lbs so far in the past 3 weeks. my best friend lost 50lbs in 3 months! also go to www.atkins.com and it will tell you all about the diet and give you a listing of what vegetables you can and can't eat

The goal for Atkins diet is to cut carbs and sugar from your diet. You can have very few vegetables as well. It is a very tricky diet, but I found it quite easy to do the first phase. Now things change up a bit when you enter the next phase where you are introducing certain things to the diet. The first phase was the best phase and the phase that showed the biggest results for me. Good Luck....I also would suggest you purchase and follow Dr. Ian's Smith The Fat Smash Diet. You can get the book from Walmart.com for only $7 including shipping.

I have never been on this diet, but my best friend and her husband did it. All I can say is that is appears to work fast, they both lost a lot of weight, however, they got bored and started eating more and more carbs (this is what you are not suppose to eat much of) anyway, 1 year later they are both heavier than what they were before they started atkins.
"DIETS" never work. You just need to cut back on junk food, drink lots of water and get enough servings of fruits and vegetables in a day. The only way to loose weight permanently is to make it become a lifestyle. Atkins is definately not the way to go!
(Excercise is very important too, even if you just take a walk)

To lose weight, a person has to reduce the calorie intake by some amount by modifying their diet. A diet without sufficient nutrients will only increase the appetite of the person trying to lose weight. Since most people combine a diet with an exercise plan, additional nutrients are required for the growth of muscles required to increase the metabolic rate required for long term weight loss. First you should you should check if it is safe.

In 2000, almost 30 years after first touting his diet, Dr. Atkins admits he had done no studies on its heart safety or to confirm his claims on its healfulness for the heart. Also he admits his diet has nutritional deficiencies. He did this in USDA forum. Here is the transcript, where he admits this (link to whole forum discussion is also below.)

Transcript:

DR. AYOOB: Just because it was brought out about Dr. Atkins' claim to reverse heart disease, and he said he's working on the data, but he's been making this claim for a long time, and that's what I --

DR. ATKINS: No, I haven't.

DR. AYOOB: Excuse me.

DR. ATKINS: I haven't been --

DR. AYOOB: Excuse me.

DR. ATKINS: -- making that claim.

DR. AYOOB: You just did, and you don't have evidence --

DR. ATKINS: Before.

DR. AYOOB: -- to back it up. Now, this diet has been out there for 30 years or close to 30 years.

DR. ATKINS: And I haven't been able to fund the study

DR. AYOOB: Excuse me. Excuse me. Ten million books in print, and you can't fund the study?

(Applause.)

DR. ATKINS: Now I can, and I will be the first doctor to dig into his own pocket to do a study, and it will be me, but it was the first time I had any money left.

DR. AYOOB: Ten million books. You market the vitamins. You sell the vitamins --

DR. ATKINS: Now.

DR. AYOOB: -- to correct the nutritional deficiencies.

DR. ATKINS: That's true. That's why I'm doing the study now.

DR. AYOOB: You market them. I keep saying --

DR. ATKINS: That's why I couldn't do it before.

DR. AYOOB: You market this. I say this is not for the public good. This is marketed. This is a money making proposition.

stay away from this "diet" at all costs. it's very unhealthy. try eating lean meats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains instead. much better for you. the atkins "diet" is nothing more than a 1 way ticket to a heart attack.
