Crayfish, often referred to as crawfish or crawdad, are freshwater crustaceans resembling small lobsters, to which they are closely related. They are found in bodies of fresh water that do not freeze to the bottom, and which have shelter against predators. Most crayfish cannot tolerate polluted water, although some species such as the invasive Procambarus clarkii are more hardy. Some crayfish have been found living as much as 3 m (10 feet) underground.
Lobsters live on rocky, sandy, or muddy bottoms from the shoreline to beyond the edge of the continental shelf. They generally live singly in crevices or in burrows under rocks.
different groups of crustaceans are known as lobsters, although the clawed lobsters (such as the genus Homarus) are most often associated with the name. Clawed lobsters are not closely related with spiny lobsters or slipper lobsters, which have no claws (chelae), or squat lobsters. The closest relatives of clawed lobsters are the reef lobster Enoplometopus and the three families of freshwater crayfish.

Lobster are almost all ocean water shell-fish, not really fresh water. Crayfish on hand are fresh-water shell-fish. Both are edible. Size does matter also. Cray fish are so much smaller than lobster. Personally I have never seen or heard of a freshwater lobster. I'm sure a crayfish will get gobbled up in the ocean. Good luck!

Crayfish or better known as crawfish are small lobster looking freshwater creatures and lobsters by comparison are large come from the ocean. Crawfish are quite small and it takes a lot of them to make a meal but they are good though.

They are totally different actually. Lobster is a Salt water crustacian where Cray fish are fresh water, or possibly brackish water (salt and fresh mix). Lobster can live out of water, but only for a day or two in cold temps. Also, Lobsters are larger and have a crusher and a pincher claw, both which are larger than all other opposable digits. They use these as their primary defense, whereas Cray fish have much smaller and more inactive "claws" that are smaller.
