It really depends on what you want out of the gym. For example, Bally's Total Fitness is pretty good all-around because you have your cardio machines, your weight machines and free weights, and your aerobics area (some of them even have swimming pools). However, if you're into strength training, they can get very crowded and may not have all the specialized equipment you might want -- in which case you may be better off with Powerhouse Gym. Best thing to do is to go into each of your local gyms and ask them for a free one-day pass so you can check the places out. They'll usually have someone who will give you a tour, show you what they offer, and go over the rates. Once you've done your comparison shopping, you can choose the gym that's right for you.

Choose the one that has all of the equipment and aminities that are important to you. Do you want a pool? spa? sauna? etc.? Of course, take into consideration the value, the people who go there, and how comfortable you feel at a particular gym. I don't know where you live, but in CA and in some other states there are gyms like 24hour Fitness and you can buy a membership that will let you attend all of their gyms. This way, if you get tired of one, you can go to another, and all of them feature different things.

Before selecting a gym, you should have a workout schedule. Take the schedule with you to a gym of your choice and determine if it has all the equipment needed to accomplish each exercise on your schedule. But above all else, there should be plenty of ladies around to keep you focused....
