I was a teen once. There is no way I'd leave my kid alone overnight, until 18. There is so many things that can go wrong & being alone, if the kid panics they could get hurt or worse.

I would say when they're in college - prior to that, I'm just not sure they're responsible enough. I'm 28 and I was probably 20 the first time I spent the night at home alone when my family went on vacation - but I was very overprotected.

I believe it depends on how mature your child is ... how you think they would handle certain situations, i certainly wouldn't leave anyone under 12 alone. I was a latchkey kid, left alone with my younger bros at age 9 that is too young. So many things could have happened that I wouldn't have been able to handle. Like certain emergencies. and so on.

Depends on the kid, but not before the age of 14, and that is for a VERY MATURE 14 year old and there are not many of those around.

It really depends on the child. Some children maybe capable of staying alone at 13 while others may not feel comfortable doing so. It really depends on the maturity level.

I think that when they become a teen they should be considered for staying home alone but the problem occurs when they don;t stay home "alone". That should be a different rule.
