People are incredibly misinformed. Think of prison and what a breeding ground it is for creating hardened criminals. Prison serves no rehabilitative service. The research (that's real research people, not the news) states that punishment actually increases reoffending rates. Of course, if an individual is at such high risk to commit a crime (which sex offender actually are not) than prison serves as a safety for the community). Nevertheless, prinicples of effective corrections state that an individual should get the least restrictive sentence to promote rehabilitation. I only wish that some of you who respond actually would read empirical articles instead of basing your opinions on the news.

Probation only works for a small select group of society. I am constantly going to VOP (violation of probation) hearings for people that should have been under the jail.
Two quick examples:
Some of you may remember the guy (Victorino) in Deltona, Florida who beat 5 people to death over an X-Box game. He was CONVICTED of some SERIOUS crimes prior to that incident and had violated his probation time and time again, but was still walking the streets. There's no way that he should have been walking the streets with the violent and sexually motivated crimes that he had committed.
Another example is a guy who I had trial on the other day who had been on probation. He raped a woman several years ago and was put on probation. Then he went out and molested some kids. Probation again. When I arrested this 30 year old man who was on probation he had beat up his 15 year old girlfriend. Of course his probation says that he can't be with minors. Go figure. His probation ended right there in the court room on Tuesday, and he is now back on the streets.
So I'll vote no, probation DOES NOT WORK!

Depends, how many people do you know that have 10 or 11 points on their driving licence, and just behave for a small time until some points run out, and then go back to speeding like a prat? I think it might scare a small minority of offenders that made their first mistake, but I see the vast majority of offenders just making sure they don't get caught for anything until the probation or suspended sentence is up.

Depends of course on the severity of the crime, the offenders' criminal history and their support system. Probation works great for some, others abuse it and usually end up in prison. I agree with one of your responders who stated that the probation officers are stretched too thin and only have time for "lip service" but probation does work for some and if it were me or my child, I would like to believe in second chances.

Punishment never works a hundred%. There are nonetheless countries interior the worldwide the place human beings would be flogged interior the streets, caned, tortured, stoned, beheaded, and function their limbs minimize off. those are some exceedingly undesirable effects for his or her movements. yet do crimes nonetheless take place? Yep. Human history incorporates some brutal and sadistic punishments that turn maximum folk's abdomen. One medieval approach of execution grew to become into to tie somebody bare and upside-down between 2 bushes. The sufferer could then be slowly sawn in a million/2 with a logging observed, commencing between the legs and practicing the pinnacle. in case you study judicial punishments for the duration of history you will see plenty greater examples. however the user-friendly denominator is that no rely how brutal or unwell the punishment grew to become into, crime nonetheless occurred. so which you're quite top, you would be able to make the punishment as disgusting and undesirable as you like, even though it won't deter specific criminals. in case you do slightly diagnosis you will actually locate that the states in usa that have capital punishment, additionally take place to have the optimum homicide fee. you may think of that the specter of the dying penalty could artwork, even though it would not. the merely right thank you to guard the susceptible is to supply recommendations-blowing social centers. Crime is oftentimes committed via desperate people who've slipped by the cracks and picture they don't have something to lose. in case you look on the countries international with the backside cases of homicide and violent crime, they have a tendency to have surprising social centers and jails that rehabilitate criminals, and structures that attempt to dodge crime interior the 1st place as antagonistic to draconian retribution after the crime has got here approximately. in many cases their social centers minimize down on the grinding poverty that in many cases finally ends up in crime.

Probation could work, if only they had enough probation officers, and of the right calibre.
Probation officers are so stretched, that they can only play lip-service to their charges.

yes because people on probation fly straighter then they ever would off of it. but i dont think that probation is for everyone. some people need to be incarcerated and some can handle being on the streets and being put in check.
