I've just seen nine, yes nine magpies in a group. There's a rhyme about it, but I don't think it goes that far:
1 for sorrow, 2 for joy, 3 for a girl, 4 for a boy....can't remember the rest of it. Any ideas?

It's different from region to region, it normally only goes up to seven but I have heard it can go up to twenty, the most common rhyme is this;
One for sorry
Two for joy
Three for a girl
Four for a boy
Five for silver
Six for gold
Seven for a secret never to be told.
There are then these lines, which I believe came from the start of the show 'Magpie' I'm not sure if they took this as part of the magpie folklore from somewhere, or if they just made it up for the show;
Eight for a wish
Nine for a kiss
Ten for a bird that you won't want to miss.
So for you it is nine for a kiss :-D

I wish I knew all the different versions, and the one that goes up to twenty because once I saw 12 at once and was always curious about how far that rhyme went.

nine is a kiss. the rhyme is :- 1 for sorrow, 2 for joy, 3 for a girl ,4 for a boy, 5 for silver, 6 for gold, 7 for a secret never to be told, 8 a wish, 9 a kiss, 10 is a bird never to be missed.
