Most importantly, keep her away from unneutered male dogs - make sure that she is secure at all times. Male dogs have been known to jump high fences or dig under them to reach a female in heat, so don't leave her alone, unattended in the back yard. You might want to keep her off carpeted areas during this time. There are doggy diapers available that might help to prevent messes, but female dogs are pretty good about keeping themselves and their living area clean. Also, unless you plan to breed her in the future, please give consideration to having her spayed - it's not too expensive and it is the responsible thing to do.

This really depends on the breed of dog. Large breeds tend to bleed a whole lot more than small breeds. There are doggy diapers you can buy to put on her. I myself have never had luck with a female keeping these on. Keep her away from intact males so she is not bred. If she is messy right now, you can put baby gates up in the kitchen if large enough for her to be in or fix another place for her that you can easily clean up. Remember, she will not start being receptive to a male until about day 10-12 of her cycle. She will most likely be standing for about 1 week. Her bleeding will slow down and turn into a straw tinged color and her vulva will swell when she is receptive to a male. Keep her away from where a male can breed her until she goes out.

My dog spot also had the same problem so we keep her under the staircase now so the carpets aren't ruined . My pop also sat her down for that dreaded heart to heart talk about the birds and the bee's perhaps you should do that . You should contact your local planned parenthood association for an appointment too , it's best to get her on the pill as soon as possible to avoid a pregnancy . Don't let them talk you into the new patches now available though as we made that mistake and it's very painful for the animal when you remove them as it pulls there fur out .
Good luck and congratulations !

If she isn't registered, there really is no reason to have her intact. Get her spayed and save yourself a lot of trouble.
You can buy daipers that are made just for dogs in season. That way, she wont soil your house.
Keep her away from other dogs, especially intact males. Even if she is around other female dogs or dogs that have been altered, she can still be aggressive towards them because of the hormones.
Good luck

Be sure to keep her away from all males for the next 3 weeks and you may want to get some diapers for dogs to prevent spotting all over your house.

the only way to stop her from having her period is to get her spayed, but if you dont want to do that she'll pretty much clean up after herself, keep her away from male dogs

Go to your local pet supply store i.e. PetCo the have a product that resembles a diaper that you can buy. Or if your not planning on breeding her the you should just have her spade it will stop her menstruation.

put something that will absorb the blood! You dont want that to get on your floor! it stains. Like a diaper. But be creative while putting it on.
