to keep your witts about you is to stay focused and strong... to be at your witts end means you are about to completely loose it....where it came from is beyond me and i am at my witts end trying to figure it out.

It comes from "at my WICK'S end" meaning, from back in the day, your candle is about to burn out and you've got nothing left - you're at your (candle) wick's end. It's been slang'd to WIT'S end since the good 'ole days
