Depending on what the problems are, many colleges may use professional judgment and make her independent.

For example, if a student came to our school and had documentation (police reports, DCFS reports, counselor statements) suggesting that a parent has been physically abusive towards her or the other parent - we would probably make this student independent.

We would not however, make a student independent just because Mom and Dad were refusing to support her because her boyfriend is a jerk.

For us the situation has to be;
1)damaging either mentally or physically to the student,
2)documentable by people outside the family (professionals preferred).

I hope this helps, and good luck.

If she has any military service, she will be considered independent. There is no way around these rules. The best thing she can do is to attend a community college if she can afford that. Or maybe only take one class at a time until she can afford to go full time.

The only way to become independandt that I know of is to be a parent or be 23. There is no loop holes I know of, I was a parent so I was already independant.

Nope other than wait until she is 21.
The way things are setup is to keep parents from saying the kid isn't a dependent when they really are. Tell her to get a job and go to school part time. A lot of people have done that.
