I was a Mormon missionary about 10 years ago. I traveled by foot, by bicycle, and by car. Sometimes we would take the bus, too. Cars are usually provided for missionaries assigned to a large area, and bicycles are used by missionaries assigned to smaller areas. I actually preferred riding bikes, but I spent most of my mission driving cars. There may be missionaries in your area driving cars, too, but they are not as visible as the ones on bicycles.

They ride bicycles because it is economical to do so and they can learn the city relatively easy that they're in. Some mission districts will provide automobiles, but even then mileage is limited each month.

Two pairs of missionaries normally work their assigned sectors. When an automobile is provided, each pair can use the vehicle every other day. Because of insurance limitations, they are unable to carry anyone else in the vehicle except fellow missionaries.

You can usually detect a missionary by the ragged trousers end on the right leg.

Bicycles are more environmentally friendly than cars and better for exercise also they are a lot quicker than walking but in some parts of the world the Bicycles get stolen but they do have cars in some areas bicycles are better for the ozone layer.

Missionaries do not get a wage or salary unlike other ministers they pay their own way and support themselves for the duration of their mission which normally lasts 18 months for sisters and 2 years for Elders.contrary to what someone posted above they are free to finish their mission at any time but most fulfill the full term.

Because it keeps them in good shape, they get some exercise, it's easier to ride up to someone to talk to them on a bike rather than a car, cars are expensive, depends on how big their mission area is, if they really need one or not...
those are all just my guesses. I am LDS.

It is PR... it is to make them look more humble. Also they have to pay their own way... Gas costs... And, they are very...extreamly..restricted in their movement. A car would make them more difficult to controle. Their controlers do not want them to get away... that is not a joke... the young people in the LDS mission system are very tightly controled.

They are always sent away to do missions. a car with insurance and gas repair and initial cost would be far too prohibitive.

I don't think they're allowed cars for some reason.
