The problem is lifetime.

I put some plates on top of the cupboards at home in a plastic bag. I didn't notice at the time it was biodegradable.

What that actually means in this context is "breaks up into dust after a few months". When I came to get the plates down a year later, I touched the bag and it just crumbled into white dust.

If we made plastic water bottles out of biodegradable plastic, you'd only have a limited amount of time to use them. Same goes for steering wheels, CD cases... sounds great in theory but in practise, biodegradable plastic would have to have a variable lifetime, eg good for 50 years, 150 years etc.

It's better for the environment to build things that last years and recycle than continually replacing them with biodegradable ones. Every time you make something, you need energy. Most of the world's energy still comes from oil and coal.

i think that all shops should be made to change the plastic bags to paper bags like in america. it would be easier to recycle then, and most people would know how to do it.
