Mothers are people too. Just as you value compliments to bolster your self-esteem, your mother would appreciate you telling her that you think she's doing a great job, or looks pretty, or cooks well, or gives good advice, etc. Treat her as you would want to be treated by your kids. Before you turn around, it will be your kid on Yahoo Answers, talking about you! Time flies, believe me. I wish you well.

She more than likely means that you are putting her down, or that your are bringing her down emotionally (you can knock someone to theirs knees physically or mentally - you know take the wind out of their sails).
