i am a chiropractor and see this situation on a daily basis. for those who have chronic back pain normal chiropractic care can usually help with those problems. so i would suggest the chiropractic route first if you have not tried it. but there are also many people out there who can't find relief with anything they try--including chiropractic.
a previous answer said there is nothing you can do for a herniated disc, well they aren't up to date on the new treatments out there for people with disc problems. if you haven't heard of it yet there is a newer treatment called spinal decompression. this type of treatment focuses on disc injuries and the problems they cause. i use the DRX9000 spinal decompression system in my office and it works wonders for people with these types of injuries. the DRX9000 is fda approved and is the best decompression system available (there are cheap knock-offs that don't give the same results).
my recommendation would be to research this treatment and then contact someone (usually a chiro) who uses it in their office. they will do an exam, take xrays, and refer you for an mri if needed. this will allow them to tell you exactly what the problem is and how it can be fixed.
i would just google "DRX9000" to find info on it and doctors in your area who may have it. this treament is able to encourage the disc to go back to it's normal orientation and also rebuild its height--which then takes the pressure off whatever nerve it is compressing.
this treatment is extremely effective for sciatica type of cases, especially if you haven't had surgery yet. i've had many patients who were scheduled for surgery, tried this treatment as a last resort, and then ended up cancelling their surgery altogether after treatment was completed. it really does work and that's what my recommendation would be for you. good luck and hopefully this gives some insight for others posting on this topic that thought nothing could be done for them anymore and they had "live" with the pain!!

Depends... how long has this been goin on? If for longer than a month has her doc. Done a xray or mri? I suffered from severe back pain for over a year and tried everything pills barely even touched it even perscriptions so my doc. Started tryn physical thearpy ha that seemed to make it worse then epidorals and spinal injections as well as chiroprators and steroids nothing worked my doc finally did a mri and my only option was surgery it took 3 but I haven't hurt since... so maybe tryn get a 2nd doc opinion its terrible to live takin pills everyday just for any quality of life so definatly try and pin point why its hurting maybe they can find a solution surgery sucks but sometimes it really does make it better! Good luck I sure do feel for her

If the pain is from a herniated disk, there is no cure. I have had a herniated disk for 18 years and you just have to tough it out. It helps to keep your weight down, be in good shape and avoid lifting that puts additional stress on the herniated disk. However, there is no cure for this particular form of back pain.
The good news is that you can lead a normal life with a herniated disk. I work, write, hike, bike, swim and pretty much do anything I want to do. I just have to be very careful when lifting heavy objects.
Note: Anyone who says there is a "cure" for a herniated disk -- with a cure defined as the problem disappearing for at least five years -- is trying to sell you a service. There are treatments to give you some relief for a herniated disk, but none that can promise it won't recur in five years or even five months.

I don't know about any "cure" unless you are talking about surgery. I have had chronic back pain for many years. I feel alot better when i am able to walk, unfortunately that is short lived unless i do it everyday. I hear stretching helps and also there are many good back exercise books out there, check your local library.

i have dealt with chronic back pain for years, from a ruptured disk, and i found that yoga is very helpful..
if your pain is in your lower back, it is almost stunning how much pain can be caused by just having a full bowel or bladder pressing up against your disk..
good luck with that, and welcome to the club

sumdumm1, all meds are temporary. Exercise can only be done when not hurting. I couldn't live without my heating pad. Cortisone injections are closest thing to a cure! Good Luck!

I have gotten tremendous relief from an epidural. Also, Birkenstocks are very helpful.
