I've only heard of that term when used in describing electrical safety or cooling. You can be injured if you come into indirect contact with electricity (like stepping in a puddle of water with an electric wire in it, or touching a transformer with a piece of wood that can cunduct electricity). Also, electrical components can be cooled if fluids touch them directly or indirectly (with a barrier between them). The amount of cooling in indirect contact will depend on the thermal conductivity of the barrier.
