Depends on how far you want to take your career. If you intend to become an officer it is better to get your degree first. I wish I would have when I joined.

Depends on your situation... If you are able to afford college yourself, I'd obtain a Bachelor's degree and seek a commission (Join your NROTC unit to see if you like the life as a Navy Officer).

If unable to afford college, but you have the GRADES and SCORES... seek out a NROTC Scholarship or appointment to the Naval Academy (if you accept, you're contracted to serve 4-6 years).

If unable to afford college, and lacking the grades... enlist and seek out every BIT of education you can scrounge. Much of the training you receive will be accreditted for college credit. At sea there are often college-level courses available. Also, research the programs that can lead to college classes in your off-duty time.

Commissioned or Enlisted ? An officer makes a great deal more money, but has far more responsibility.

My little brother had better grades and went thru NROTC scholarship at California - Berkeley. He served his 5 years and got out.

I enlisted after 3 years of college. After 6 years of service I finally got shore-duty, finished my BA in History in 2 years, and did one more sea-tour. After that I was commissioned and spent 4 years as an officer.

Though I NEVER regret my enlisted time... I would have far more enjoyed 15 yrs at officers pay !

It depends on what you want to get out of it. I served 4 years in the Navy and I would HIGHLY recommend going to college first. You can probably even get into an ROTC program and have the military pay for college. Then you'd be an officer when you went in and there's definitely more perks going that way.

It depends on what kind of career you want, but the Navy has GREAT programs to help pay for college, particularly if you join first.

Also, you could join NROTC, and have them pay for you to go to school while you're in college, plus get a commission afterwards, instead of starting out enlisted.

1. if you go in after high school and do your 4yrs you can get the GI bill which pays for college........
2. If you go in after completing 4yrs of college and getting your degree, you enter into the Navy as a higher ranked individual.....

You should always go to college if you have the money and determination it takes to get through. not to mention you will be a commissioned officer instead of an enlisted grunt.
