While circumcision is common among Muslims, it's origins are cultural, not religious.
About 80% of Muslims think that since Mohammed was born with the birth defect Aposthia, or apparent lack of foreskin, then being circumcised is the best way to live like the Prophet. Others think that since He was NOT circumcised and Allah DID NOT have Him mention circumcision in the Qur'an, then it is best to live by what IS in the Qur'an, for example:
3:191 Our Lord, you have not created all this in vain!
82:7-8 "The One who created you, designed you, and perfected you. In whatever design He chose, He constructed it."
95:4 We created man in the best design.
A Muslim may rightfully think it is sinfully arrogant to change God's creation; based on these passages. (1)
Every mammal on earth (except bats for some reason) has evolved a foreskin, and that is no accident. There is no health benefit to circumcision, and the loss of the foreskin poses severe drawbacks to sexual enjoyment for a man and his partner. The foreskin is no trickier to care for than eyelids; leave it alone. (2)
No national health organization in the world recommends routine circumcision. Circumcision does not prevent STDs like AIDS. (3) 450,000 Americans who were circumcised at birth have died of AIDS since 1980. The rate of HIV infection is higher in mostly-cut USA than in mostly-intact Europe. 80% of the world is happily intact and has no special health, hygiene, or social problems.
There are about:
500 million circumcised Muslims
120 million circumcised Christians
30 million circumcised Atheists
9 million circumcised Jews
alive today.

dear brother,
first of all i should tell u that circumcision is not an obligatory practice in islam.
a person can be a muslim, even if he is not circumcised.
the concept of circumcision among muslims has been taken from the sayings of prophet mohammad's (pbuh) companions which put it in the list of preferred things , but never obligatory.
now a days , there has been a lot of research regarding circumcision which has proved that circumcision reduces the chances of HIV infection to about 70% and is also a preventive measure for penis cancer. so, in islam, circumcision is for one's own benefit....if u dont want to do it, then dont do, u can still be a muslim.
if u have any more queries on islam , u can ask me thru mail at

"Surley" a lot of things that seems to have no connection with the creator of the ---universe--- (and other things) seem to befall upon the shoulders and penises of Muslims.
Why does god bother whether we eat pork or not? Why it is an abomination for him whether you are gay or not? Think of yourself: if you were the god of ants, would you care whether they shook their antennas in a particular fashion?
But Islam's god, along with those of Judeo-Christian ethos have these kind of trivial nonsense non-issues. I guess when you end up being the only god around, it ges very lonely. So lonely that you feel like cutting other people's dicks for no good reason.
One theory goes like this: My very own johnson mutiliated without any prior consent told me that God, being the dick head he is, does not like competition. So he cuts off close to other dick heads as a warning. Don't grow too big on God.
Anyhow, the real reason is this: Islam is a spin off of Judeo-Christian tradition so it embraced some of the rituals to strenghten the theory with practices that seem to serve some purpose, sometimes, if time allowed.
If the child survives the involuntary mutiliation of his genitalia (something no parent has the right to, since this is not a curative practice but at best a peventive measure) he has "better hygiene".
Well, along that line of thougt if you have no hands, you have even better hygiene (no eye smearing, no germ contact through hands which constitute the majority of the infections).
But one can say: what about the loss of perfectly healthy tissue teeming with active nerve ends?
Exactly.

Circumcision was a common practice among Arabs even before Islam.
After Islam Muslim follow it as a Sunnah of Prophet Abraham
Peoples should learn that some funny remarks can not hide their ignorance; it would be really good for them if they try to learn some history too.

In its day and age circumcision was to make folk realise that they were God's chosen people, setting them apart from pagan races. Of course this applied to all Abraham's offspring, including the Jews. But all of us have drifted so far from God's perfect teaching that circumcision no longer has any meaning, and it is a barbaric practice. _ Ask Doctors.

God told Abraham to circumcise himself and his sons. it has become both a Jewish and mohommedan custom. In the case of the jews, their reason is simply because God told them to and in the case if mohommedanism, it's generally regarded as just a matter of hygiene. It's now proved that there are really no hygiene advantages but the custom is too strong to change.

The performance of circumcision is one of the rules of cleanliness in Islam. It is reported by Abu Hurairah that the Prophet Muhammed (Peace Be Upon Him) mentioned:
Five are the acts quite akin to fitra: circumcision, shaving the pubes, cutting the nails, plucking the hair under the armpits and clipping (or shaving) the moustache (Recorded in "Sahih Muslim", "Sahih Bukhari", "Musnad Ahmed" and "Sunnah At-Tirmidhi"). The word fitra in relation to cleanliness can refer to the Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) with regard to this matter, and fitra also "implies an inner sense of cleanliness in man which is proof of his moral convictions and mental health".

God told one of Islam's forefathers to circumcise his son, and to pass the tradition down. it was a physical sign of a person's devotion to the faith, and became part of the religion.

Yes, "Vickezo" is quite correct, it's a hygene thing. But how difficult is it to pull back the foreskin and clean beneath...that's all it takes to avoid smegma. In many ways, the foreskin protects the sensitive glans of the penis making it more reactive during sex...just like other parts of the body...keep it clean
