The holy prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) could not read and write because nowadays non-islam cannot say the holy Quran was referred from any other religions. Thats all.

Supposedly the angel Gabriel spoke the entire Quran to Muhammad. Folks then wrote it
down as Muhammad recited it to them. They wrote it on palm leaves, skins and other such things. When Muhammad had passed his companions collected them up and wrote the official Quran. Muhammad himself never saw the original Quran that was written by man's hand.

Muhammad (PBUH) is the greatest teacher of the humankind.
Being able to read and write is not important, main thing is knowledge. He has the knowledge of everyworld and the Loh-e-Mehfooz.
(www.azeemiaspirituallibrary.coms.ph)
Allah is his teacher and Muhammad knows the secrets of the whole universe.
Gibrael said "Iqra"(read)
Muhammad (PBUH) said: "I don't know how to read".
The angel again said "Iqra".
Muhammad (PBUH) gave the same answer.
The angel embraced Muhammad Mustafa (PBUH) and recited the verses:
"Al-Alaq (The Clot, Read) (96) - Roukh 1
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Read: In the name of thy Lord Who createth, {1} Createth man from a clot. {2} Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, {3} Who teacheth by the pen, {4} Teacheth man that which he knew not. {5} Nay, but verily man is rebellious {6} That he thinketh himself independent! {7} Lo! unto thy Lord is the return. {8} Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth {9} A slave when he prayeth? {10} Hast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah) {11} Or enjoineth piety? {12} Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward? {13} Is he then unaware that Allah seeth? {14} Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock - {15} The lying, sinful forelock - {16} Then let him call upon his henchmen! {17} We will call the guards of hell. {18} Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). {19}
Muhammad (PBUH) was given the knowledge of Loh-o-Qalam and the universe by Allah Almighty!

Nothing; the supposedly original writings of the Quran are in his wife's handwriting, and she was a Catholic. She could have made the whole thing up herself, though I can't imagine why.

perhaps he got someone to write it down for him. remember that Jesus never actually authored any part of the Bible, so i dont think it is beyond the imagination that someone else close to Muhammed did it for him.
